Reigniting the spark: from lecturer to passionate speaker

If you’ve ever had the opportunity to speak about your passion, you’ll know it can be an exhilarating experience. It has the potential to ignite a spark within both the speaker and the audience.

If you’ve had this privilege, you’ll understand how seeing people get pleasure from your talk is a fantastic feeling.

With five years lecturing in higher education under my belt, I’ve missed this feeling. Every lecture was an opportunity to inspire and ignite curiosity in others. I relished in the connections forged through storytelling and the sharing of knowledge.

With my career taking me behind the lens and out of the lecture halls, I’d forgotten how much I loved the feeling of sharing in this way. It’s been very soul affirming to have been reminded of my love for this experience.

Over the past couple of months, I’ve been invited to speak at a number of events, across the UK. I've been able to share my passions as a nature aligned brand and lifestyle photographer. It’s been nothing short of wonderful.

Pinch me moment photography speaker opportunities

Over the last month, it has felt like moments beyond my wildest dreams were coming true. I took to the stage at the National Space Centre for the Space Lates series, to talk about "How to See and Photograph the Aurora Borealis" and present on the Shoot to Inspire stage at The Photography Show, talking about ‘When things go dark’.

Photography workshops and talks like this feel nothing short of surreal. And it was amazing to hear how much people enjoyed the talks:

‘I really enjoyed your presentation, Rebecca, very informative and interesting so much so that I sat through it twice... I found your enthusiasm absolutely infectious.’

Rebecca Douglas talked about the aurora borealis with such passion and it was great to listen to someone talk passionately whilst teaching.’

I adored speaking at this year’s POW Thanet Festival on The Digital Day, discussing ‘Relentless Restlessness: Rest, ADHD & Women’ and finally I spoke at RSPB about ‘Islandness and unlocking new horizons - exploring islands & seabirds of Britain’.

My flame for speaking in front of an audience whilst doing these photography workshops and talks has definitely been rekindled. Which is why I felt pulled to organise a number of photography workshops and talks as I celebrate my birthday on the weekend of 6-7 April 2024 in my birth town of Margate.

Curating a programme of talks at The Community Rooms Margate Caves

It’s been so much fun curating a programme of photography workshops and talks for you to enjoy. I’ll be exploring some of my favourite topics, connecting people, place and planet and the innate power of photography.

With limited time and space, I’ve made this a ticketed event so if there’s a talk or workshop that piques your interest, go book your space to secure your spot.

Here’s a flavour of the programme:

10am Sunday 7th April

Her future vision - Engaging girls in photography (Free)

This free session is for girls who have an interest in photography. They might want to hear about how to gain experience, build a portfolio and start a career in the industry. I’m incredibly passionate about removing barriers for women and girls. Moreover, I would love to empower curiosity about self-employment and the creative industry. In this talk, I’ll share more about my squiggly career path into photography that started here in Thanet when I was 14! This talk is open to girls under 18, a parent/guardian must be in attendance.

11am Sunday 7th April

Late diagnosis ADHD & me - A candid talk about my journey of discovery (£9 inc VAT)

I spent 37 years of my life feeling restless, unsettled and was forever searching for a fix. It wasn't until my late-to-the-party ADHD diagnosis in 2021 that it all made sense. I'd been looking at 'fixing' scattered facets of what collectively turned out to be ADHD. The search was called off and I started to make sense of everything. I'll be talking about how I realised I have ADHD, what the journey has been like since my diagnosis in 2021 and what this has meant for my life and business.

12pm and 6pm Sunday 7th April

Chasing the aurora borealis in Thanet & beyond (£9 inc VAT)

You know it’s my favourite subject, so it had to make the list. In this talk I’ll be sharing how to chase the aurora borealis and hints and tips on how to do this from Thanet. I’ve chased the aurora for over a decade and dreamt about capturing it from here in Thanet, a dream which came true last year (I went on to capture it 9 times in 2023!) There are increased chances of seeing the aurora over the next three to four years as the sun approaches the peak of its 11 year cycle. I'll be sharing what causes the aurora, how to experience this epic celestial phenomenon right here from Thanet and tips on how to shoot it on your phone.

1.30pm Sunday 7th April

Rewild your connection to nature (£9 inc VAT)

In this talk, you’ll discover photo adventures in nature you can embark on from your doorstep and here in the UK, highlighting just how much beauty and wonderment exists when you're tuned in to seeking it out. This talk aims to ignite and inspire your curiosity and rewild your connection with nature. I’ll be sharing some of the creatures and scenes I've encountered along the way as well as hints and tips on how to know when epic things in nature unfold on your doorstep.

2.30pm Sunday 7th April

Into the blue - An introduction to underwater photography in Thanet & UK seas (£9 inc VAT)

There are so many amazing encounters to be had with nature, just a few metres from the shore. I’m passionate about exploring our blue planet and this talk will take you through what kit I have in my snorkel and camera bag, what to look out for in our local sea and waters around the UK and how to snorkel with jellyfish. I'll also highlight a range of camera options, from waterproofing your phone to dedicated underwater cameras.

3.30pm Sunday 7th April

Taking to the skies - A guide to getting into flying drones (£9 inc VAT)

I've been flying drones since 2017 and love seeing how dynamic the coastline is, with all the incredible organic patterns and textures the ever flowing tide creates. I've shot commercial projects across the UK and Europe and have been interviewed by National Geographic about flying drones. So if you've been thinking about it, this session will take you through a kickstart guide on how to get started.

5pm Sunday 7th April

When the world goes dark - Night time photo adventures along the Thanet coast & beyond (£9 inc VAT)

So many spectacular adventures in nature await us after dark. As we approach summer, this talk will prepare you for what to look for to see and shoot bioluminescence, noctilucent or 'night shining' clouds and how a UV torch can make for epic rock pooling by night.

The joy of sharing passion is profound

Whether it's through visual stories or meaningful conversations. The act of connecting with others over shared interests gives me so much pleasure.

I believe in the transformative power of human connection when passions are shared.

Through these photography workshops, I aim to create a space where individuals can come together and get curious.

Because in a world often characterised by its fast-paced nature and superficial connections, sharing your passions with others is a beacon of radical authenticity.
