Botany Bay: sculpted chalk and salt-soaked stillness – Locations in Thanet

On the eastern edge of Kent, Thanet holds the sea on three sides. A coastal peninsula shaped by chalk, tide and sky. Just over 75 minutes from London by rail, it offers expansive beaches, wild cliff paths and timeless towns. Botany Bay is one of Thanet’s most photographed beaches and with good reason. Its towering chalk stacks and wide golden sands create a cinematic backdrop full of atmosphere, drama and light.

This place is home for me. I grew up here, watching the seasons shift across the shoreline. It’s where my connection to light, weather and wild space began. It’s also why I return to Botany Bay, again and again, to create visual stories that honour the relationship between people, place and planet.

What the landscape is like

Botany Bay is known for its striking chalk formations. Weather-carved stacks, sea arches and rippled rock layers that rise straight from the sand. The beach is enclosed by high white cliffs, which catch the light and create a natural amphitheatre for photography.

At low tide, the beach expands into a quiet world of tidal pools, seaweed textures and soft sand. At high tide, it transforms into a more intimate, secluded space, with the stacks rising straight from the water.

It’s a place that holds contrast and calm in equal measure. Botany Bay is ideal for brands that want to lean into natural textures, soft drama and wild elegance.

Light and tide

Botany Bay faces east, so sunrise here is luminous. Light spills across the cliffs and pools with a golden softness that lasts longer than you’d expect. Early morning and golden hour offer the best conditions for portraits, drone work and natural light storytelling.

Tide timings shape everything here. Low tide reveals wide sandbars and mirrored pools. High tide brings the water close to the cliff edge, with changing reflections depending on season and weather.

Important: Botany Bay beach is best accessed at low or mid tide. At high tide, some areas are inaccessible or cut off.

Accessibility and facilities

  • Access: Steep stepped path down from the cliff-top car park
  • Parking: Small car park nearby, often fills quickly in summer
  • Facilities: Seasonal café and toilets at the top of the cliff
  • Dogs: Not permitted between 10am–6pm, 1 May–30 Sept

Despite its popularity, early mornings or weekdays often offer quiet, spacious conditions. Perfect for shoots with intention and calm.

About me

Hey my love, I’m Rebecca. A visual storyteller, unleashing the power of photo and video to rewilding our connection to nature. I am also an AuDHD – an autistic ADHDer.

By illuminating the liminal space where myth, magick and intellect meet, we ignite collective curiosity, enchantment and awe to empower the healing of people and planet.

My work as a photographer and ocean storyteller has taken me from the wild coasts of Scotland to the wild edges of Iceland.

It was with immense gratitude and a sense of deepening purpose that a story I captured gain 2nd Place in the Conservation (Impact) category for Ocean Photographer of the Year 2024.

As President of the Board of Trustees for Whale Wise and a Marine Mammal Medic with BDMLR, I advocate for our blue planet through powerful visuals and purpose-driven narratives.

Together, let’s embrace the wild edges where of people, place, and planet meet.
