Chasing the aurora borealis

A beginner's guide: How to see and photograph the northern lights

LEARN HOW TO SEE MAGICK IN THE NIGHT SKY!

Hello, I’m Rebecca, a nature-aligned brand and lifestyle photographer based in South East England. I’ve been incredibly privileged to have seen the aurora on many occasions, from Scotland, Sweden, The Faroe Islands, Canada and Norway.

But the place where it left a lasting impression was in March 2023, when I captured it from my home in Ramsgate and the clifftops of Botany Bay in Broadstairs when a strong geomagnetic storm created the most surreal and memorable night! And those nights continued through 2023, with so many people asking me how to see and photography the aurora in the south of the UK and beyond.

Seeing the aurora borealis is something which will take up space in your heart forever. I’m here to show you how you, too, can witness this incredible northern lights without having to jump on a plane to Iceland.

The time is now

THE SOLAR MAXIMUM APPROACHES

You’re here at absolutely the right time. Why? Because there’s science behind why seeing this magical sight from the UK is going to become more and more possible in the next few years.

But first, what are the northern lights?

Our sun goes through an 11 year cycle and as it gets more active and it releases more solar flares and geomagnetic energy (charged particles) into space. When these particles reach Earth, they interact with the gases in our atmosphere, producing the colourful lights and dance of the auroras.

If there's a higher-than-usual level of solar activity, it can push the auroral oval (the area where the auroras are typically visible) further south, making it possible for the aurora to be seen across the UK, even as far south as Kent and Cornwall and some folk have caught it from the mainland of Europe!

It’s the sun's way of reminding us it is the centre of our universe, putting on a show for us here on Earth.

Because of the cyclical nature of the sun’s activity, it opens up possibilities and opportunities for the northern lights to be seen from all over the UK and parts of Europe in the coming years.

Meet your mentor

I’m nature-aligned brand and lifestyle photographer, citizen scientist and for as long as I can remember, I've been drawn to the night sky.

Contemplating our place in the cosmos never ceases to amaze me.

The night sky possesses the unique ability to simultaneously anchor us to the Earth and inspire profound awe, all within a single moment.

An educator, stargazer, wild spirit and lover of light, nature is where I come alive, where my heart and soul are most deeply connected. I hold the belief that life is cyclical and every one of us is an integral part of the intricate web of nature.

Through my lens, I illuminate the extraordinary in the ordinary, revealing the boundless beauty of our natural world and the profound connection between people and planet.

Aurora Borealis

The aurora chaser

I’ve been called The Aurora Chaser, and have been fortunate to witness and capture the aurora dance across the skies over the past decade - from the sweeping landscapes of Iceland to Norway and the remote Outer Hebrides.

But the most special place I’ve witnessed this celestial phenomenon was when I captured it from my office window in my home of Ramsgate, before chasing it along the north Kent coast to Botany Bay, when something I’d only ever dreamt of became a reality on a rare night of powerful activity in March 2023.

My aurora imagery and citizen science writing has been featured in National Geographic, Ernest Journal and Iceland Monitor to name just a few and I've been featured on BBC Radio Kent on several occasions, as I’ve chased the aurora live on the radio.

If there’s a specialist subject to ask me about, aurora chasing is it! And it’s this knowledge which I’ve distilled into this course so you can be guided on your own aurora adventure.
