Snorkelling off Troon Beach in Ayrshire, Scotland felt like I was like stepping into a world of enchantment. 🌊✨
Out of nowhere a vibrant coral-hued barrel jellyfish emerged and I was utterly captivated. This was the second time I’d ever seen one and I never knew they had such diverse colours!
For a matter of seconds, my husband and I popped our heads out of the water to talk. However, when we looked back under the surface we couldn't see the barrel jellyfish! It had literally vanished as suddenly as it had appeared.
I never want moments like this to end. It was so captivating to watch it move. The barrel jellyfish was the size of my torso and I’m 6 foot tall. It was approximately 2 foot across it’s medusa and approaching a meter in length!
Nature's surprises are the best kind, reminding us that the sea holds endless wonders waiting to be discovered.

Discover the Enigmatic Beauty of Barrel Jellyfish in the UK Waters
Barrel jellyfish (Rhizostoma pulmo) are captivating marine creatures that grace the coastal waters of the United Kingdom. They enchant us with their gentle presence and striking characteristics. These mesmerising beings hold secrets beneath their gelatinous exteriors, from their varying colours to their important role within our marine ecosystem.
Despite their apparent simplicity, they contribute to the intricate balance of marine life by providing a vital food source for various species. This includes larger predators such as leatherback sea turtles and seabirds. These jellyfish also have an impact on nutrient distribution as they consume plankton and release waste. This enriches the surrounding water with essential elements.
Moreover, their presence and interactions with other species can influence the structure and dynamics of marine communities. Meaning they are contributing to the overall health and biodiversity of UK coastal waters. Understanding the ecological role of barrel jellyfish is crucial for effective marine conservation and management strategies in the region.
I think they might be my newest obsession!

A Palette of Colours: Exploring the Kaleidoscope of Barrel Jellyfish
One of the most fascinating aspects of barrel jellyfish and something I was unaware of until this encounter, is their ability to display an array of colours, creating a captivating spectacle as they drift through the ocean currents. While their bell-shaped bodies are typically translucent, they can take on hues ranging from soft pastels to vibrant shades, often influenced by the surrounding environment and their diet. This incredible colour diversity adds a touch of magic to our coastal waters. It invites us to observe their ever-changing appearance. The first one I saw in Pembrokeshire was brilliant white in colour and I had no idea they existed in these colours! It has made me so obsessed with wanting to get back into clear seas in the west of our isles, which is where they're predominantly seen.
