Don’t wish me a ‘happy’ International Women’s Day.
In this world of social media lies uneasy trend,
One that shatters the potency of the message this day gets to send.
For if it becomes about wishing me a ‘happy’ International Women’s Day, we are finished,
The essence of our struggle, our unity, becomes so very diluted and diminished.
On International Women’s Day, what joy do we proclaim,
When history’s pages echo with injustice and pain?
For centuries, women’s voices silenced, pushed aside,
Their dreams, their hopes, their dignity denied.
What happiness can we find in a world where women bleed,
For equal rights, for recognition, for the chance to lead?
Where glass ceilings remain unbroken, barriers still stand tall,
And the echoes of misogyny reverberate in almost every hall.
In the shadows of the past, the witch hunts left their mark,
A legacy of fear, of scapegoating, the discrimination was stark.
Yet still, the empowered woman rises, undeterred,
Her spirit unbroken, her resolve unwavering, her voice heard.
So let us not celebrate with false smiles and cheer,
But with deep reflection, with empathy, with tears.
For while the journey ahead may be long and steep,
Together, we march forward, our hopes and dreams to keep.
Here is to the trail blazers, light workers, rebels, mothers,
The witches, visionaries, wild women and lovers.
For those who use their privilege to disrupt broken systems and structures,
And live with an awakened spirit that vibes in a way that dismantles and ruptures.
On this International Women’s Day, let us stand in solidarity,
With the women who came before us and those sitting beside us faithfully.
For in this heart-led march, we’re carving a path for others to follow,
As we sow the seeds of change, full of hope for the equality of tomorrow.
