A SUB-ARCTIC VOLCANIC ISLAND IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SEA

THE MOST AMAZING COUNTRY ON EARTH

Iceland – land of fire and ice

Iceland is my favourite place on earth and it holds such a big piece of my heart. I first visited in 2014 and fell in love and over the years I have shot proposals and elopements there, led Iceland photography tours and captured branding photography.

I’ve travelled several times in every season and explored extensive areas of the country. Winter is my favourite time, I love the cold and the surrender that nature requires you give when storms arrive. And of course, winter is when there is most darkness for aurora chasing too!

I’ll be sharing stories of adventures in Iceland, hints and tips and creating images for my Print Shop to bring gorgeous scenes home to you.

Sundhnúksgígar – 24th March 2024

The Reykjanes Peninsula, just south of Iceland’s capital city of Reykjavík, has shown remarkable volcanic activity over the past few years, with eruptions in 2021, 2022 and continuing into 2023.⁣

Until November 2023, the activity had been confined to uninhibited areas of Iceland but something changed, marked by a powerful earthquake swarm seeing the residents of Grindavik evacuating their homes. A vast magma intrusion ran under the town and out to sea, estimated to be 20km long. Remarkably, an eruption didn’t happen

Activity continued and in Dec ’23 a fissure eruption started. The eruption was short and ended within 48 hours.

But inflation of a sill 4-5km below the Blue Lagoon started almost instantly, filling with magma. Since then there seems to be an eruption cycle, with the inflation reaching a critical level and another eruption starts.

Each eruption has been a profound reminder of Earth’s ever-changing landscape, where new ground is forged right before our eyes.⁣

This March, fortune aligned with my travel plans, and an eruption began just as I landed in Iceland and I was able to take a helicopter flight to witness the eruption from just a few metres above.
