Noctourism & experiences after dark

VISUAL STORYTELLING ACROSS THE WILD EDGES OF EARTH, SEA & SKY — FROM SUNSET TO SUNRISE

When the world goes dark

Some places become even more extraordinary after sunset. Noctourism photography adventures include the Aurora dancing above a cabin, stars seen from bed. Moonlit swims, bioluminescent seas, wildlife emerging after dark and the glow of a fire beneath a dark sky.

I create visual stories of the experiences that unfold between sunset and sunrise, helping destinations, places to stay and experience-led brands inspire people to venture into the dark and discover what is waiting there.

The night is full of stories

A different world reveals itself after dark

When daylight disappears, our relationship with a place changes.

We look up. Our senses sharpen, familiar landscapes become unfamiliar. Wildlife emerges, the sea begins to glow and beneath truly dark skies, we remember how extraordinary it is simply to see the stars.

Noctourism photography invites us to experience places differently, through curiosity, wonder and the moments of awe that connect us more deeply to the natural world.

I tell stories across the wild edges of earth, sea and sky, capturing the experiences that can only happen when the world goes dark.

AURORA · STARGAZING · MOONLIGHT · NOCTURNAL WILDLIFE · BIOLUMINESCENCE · NIGHT SWIMMING · ROCKPOOLING · NIGHT HIKING · NIGHT SNORKELLING

For more than 16 years, I’ve been creating noctourism stories in the hours when available light disappears.

I captured weddings for just over the first decade of my career. Winter put you through your paces: short days, dark venues, unpredictable weather and celebrations unfolding long after sunset.

But in that alchemy, I saw opportunity.

I created distinctive images after dark and as I shared them, couples saw something they hadn’t imagined for themselves. They began choosing winter dates, making time in their day for photographs after dark and wanting to create those experiences for themselves. I built a wedding business that was as busy through the darker months as it was in summer.

It showed me something I’ve carried into all of my work since:

Before anything is chosen, it’s felt.

The opportunity after sunset

That’s what excites me about the opportunity with noctourism photography and storytelling after dark. There are hours of the day and whole seasons of the year, full of experiences that people may never think to seek out simply because nobody has shown them what they could feel like.

What changes when the sun goes down? And what becomes possible in winter? What are people missing because nobody has thought to show them?

When daylight fades, different stories surface. Sometimes they’re already happening and needs the storytelling that helps discover them. Other times, the support of a trusted eye helps to recognise the magic of the story waiting to be told.

And that’s where the opportunity lies.

Noctourism storytelling brings hidden potential into view

What happens here after dark?

Most places are marketed around what happens in daylight. Opening hours, itineraries, photography and campaigns naturally gravitate towards the part of the day that’s easiest to see. But that can leave a significant part of a place’s identity, and its potential, unexplored.

What happens here after dark?

It’s a question that can open up new ways to experience a destination, extend a stay, encourage travel beyond the traditional season, or give people another reason to return.

And the answer won’t be the same everywhere. Understanding what belongs to your place or experience matters. Its landscape, wildlife, culture, community, seasonality and relationship with the natural world all shape what the night can offer.

That’s where I start: with curiosity. Looking at what’s already happening, what could be developed and where storytelling might unlock an opportunity that hasn’t yet been considered.

From there, we can create the visual world around it, noctourism photography and film that gives people something to connect with long before they experience it.

Ways we can work together after dark

Bringing the night to life

Noctourism photography captures what a moment feels like. Film brings movement and sound. Timelapse reveals changes unfolding across the night. Drone places the experience within the wider landscape. I bring these together as the story requires, creating visual libraries for websites, campaigns, social, editorial, PR and destination marketing.

Photography

Imagery that evokes a feeling, inviting someone to imagine the experience before they’ve lived it themselves. I capture the atmosphere, people, landscape and moments of wonder that allow someone to imagine what it might feel like to be there.

Film & short-form video

Following changes that unfold across minutes or hours – The Milky Way moving across the sky, aurora dancing, darkness falling and landscapes changing beneath the night sky.

Timelapse

Some of the night’s most extraordinary stories unfold too slowly for us to see them happening. Timelapse compresses minutes into seconds, revealing stars moving across the sky, aurora shifting overhead and the transition from daylight into darkness..

Drone

Aerial imagery reveals how an experience sits within the landscape. From the last light through blue hour to illuminated places and aurora-filled skies, drone photography and film can bring scale, geography and a completely different perspective to the story.

My work after dark extends beyond the images I create. I speak, write and present about noctourism, the aurora, night-sky photography and the ways darkness can change how we experience and connect with place.

Bringing together years of experience in the field with photography, science, storytelling and a deep curiosity about the natural world. Whether I’m speaking to a live audience, presenting on camera or writing editorial, I make complex ideas accessible without losing the wonder that makes us curious about them in the first place.

From the science behind the aurora to the possibilities of noctourism, I’m interested in what happens when knowledge changes the way we see — and gives us another reason to look up, step outside and experience the world after dark.

How to plan a night sky photography adventure

The best nights under the stars rarely happen by accident. They’re born from curiosity, patience and a touch of planning that lets us meet moments that are filled with wonder and awe. Knowing when the moon will rise, how the weather will shift and where darkness still reigns gives us the freedom to explore without…

How to rewild your nights

We live in a world that has forgotten to embrace the night sky. Electric light spills into our streets, our homes and our nervous systems, keeping us awake long after our bodies long for rest. Yet when we step outside and let darkness touch us again, something ancient stirs. Rewilding our nights isn’t about escaping…

There’s a whole other world after sunset

The question is what happens in yours?

If you’re a destination, place to stay, experience provider or purpose-led brand with a nocturnal story waiting to be told, I’d love to hear about it.
