Staying completely off-grid in Devon: Wild Comfort's Birdhouse Cabins

The final stop of my South West adventure took me to Devon.

Lou and Tim who run Wild Comfort invited me to stay in their incredible Birdhouse cabins.

Their vision was to create an environmentally low impact business. With no concrete poured, everything moveable, sustainable materials used and locally sourced, it’s an incredible story how they’ve turned their vision into reality and the result is just breathtaking.

Overlooking the Start Bay coastline and just a few minutes walk from Blackpool Sands, a blue flag beach, the Birdhouse cabins are nestled inside a secret seaside woodland garden.

Perfectly and ethically formed, using not just sustainable materials and local craftsmanship but with environmentally friendly technologies. Each Birdhouse cabin has their own private bathroom and private decking with jaw-dropping views.

Combining an extraordinary off-grid wild location with comfort and style. I don’t think there was a more perfect place for me to stay.

Embracing Nature: An Immersive Experience

The port window provided all the entertainment I needed as I sat and gazed out above the treeline at the sea glistening in the distance. One night under the full moon, we sat in the rocking chairs on the veranda where you could kick back and dream.

Staying in the Birdhouses was such an immersive experience! One night it rained and the sound of the rain droplets on the roof was incredible. You felt like you were part of the surrounding environment.

Often you can’t get stylish accommodation in an off grid location where you can access beautiful wild spots. This place is a total treat.

Weaving down through ancient woodland you found yourself at The Captain’s Cabin, a hub to cook complete with log burner and a pizza oven! Further down through the woodland you reach a gate that offers private access to the beach, that stretches from Stoke Fleming to Start Point in South Devon. We spent the whole day at Blackpool Sands - where my friend learnt to paddle board in pretty big swell!

Off-Grid Luxury: Eco-Friendly Comforts

Called Little Owl and Honey Buzzard, the birdhouses are perfectly formed to sleep two in a large double bed. Each Birdhouse cabin has its own private bathroom cabin. I was fascinated by the eco toilet, a high-tech off-grid loo, which incinerated waste. How much cooler is that than a composting loo?!

For off grid comforts there’s a gas hob, hot and cold water, and a cool box for that all important brew. There’s also a biofuel fireplace for chiller days and a hot shower in the bathroom cabin with eco-friendly products.

So, whether you’re a beach lover, birdwatcher, cyclist, surfer, walker, gardener, foodie or boatie, this is an incredible place to stay.

I fell in love with the Birdhouses - the design of the cabin makes you feel part of the woodlands and wildlife. It was an incredible experience and extraordinary stay in an extraordinary setting.
