Ramsgate Royal Harbour: light, legacy and tidal stories – Locations in Thanet
Thanet is a peninsula on the east coast of Kent, surrounded by the sea on three sides. Just over an hour from London, it holds a unique balance of coastal charm, tidal wildness and shifting light. Making it a dream for visual storytelling grounded in nature and place. I was raised here, and now live and work by the sea. My studio looks across to France, and Ramsgate Royal Harbour is just moments from my door. I walk here almost every day, drawn to the energy of tide, wind, light and the sense of story that lingers in every stone and sail.
Ramsgate Royal Harbour is the only one of its kind in the UK. Designated by King George IV in 1821 and it remains one of Thanet’s most visually and historically layered spaces. It’s a powerful location for brands, creatives and changemakers seeking to root their storytelling in heritage, atmosphere and elemental beauty.

What the landscape is like
Ramsgate Royal Harbour is a working marina bordered by curved harbour walls, grand Georgian terraces and hidden tunnels. Boats come and go with the tide. Masts chime in the wind. There’s a constant sense of movement here. A gentle thrum of life shaped by sea and story.
From high vantage points along Military Road, down to the arches on Harbour Parade, and through to the lighthouse and tidal gates, the Ramsgate Royal Harbour area offers multiple perspectives and rich textures.
It’s perfect for visual work that wants to evoke a sense of journey, maritime heritage or quiet resilience. There’s history in the air, but also a clarity, like a horizon that keeps opening up.

Light and tide
Ramsgate Royal Harbour is east and south-facing, catching beautiful morning and midday light that dances across the water and buildings. In the evening, golden hour filters softly across the arches, creating deep shadows and painterly tones.
- Low tide: reveals seaweed-laced textures, moored boats grounded in the mud, and access to the outer harbour walls
- High tide: fills the marina, creating elegant reflections and a sense of fullness
This is one of my favourite places to chase light. Whether photographing at dawn, in moody overcast or against a blazing sunset, Ramsgate Royal Harbour always offers something stirring.

Accessibility and facilities
- Access: Wide paved walkways throughout, with step-free and wheelchair-friendly routes
- Parking: Multiple pay-and-display options nearby
- Facilities: Harbour cafés, restaurants, public toilets and small shops
- Dogs: Welcome on leads along most areas, though not on all adjoining beach spaces in summer
Ramsgate Royal Harbour is one of the most accessible, versatile locations in Thanet. Equally suited to movement-rich shoots or slow, reflective storytelling.
