Illuminating the stories of seabirds through photography

Seabirds live their lives at the wildest edges of earth, sea and sky. They return to cliffs, islands and coastlines are vital sanctuaries for breeding, many returning to the same nest year after year. I am endlessly fascinated by seabird photography, immersing in the liminal spaces where thousands of wings carve patterns across the skies, where we are lucky enough to witness some of the most beautiful creatures on earth.

As a seabird photographer, I am drawn to their raw beauty and feel a deep responsibility to tell the stories of their fragility and resilience, illuminating how human actions and changing seas are reshaping the wild edges they call home.

My work has taken me to many of the remote islands around the UK, from the volcanic cliffs of Iceland, the Faroe Islands and the Norwegian Arctic archipelago, the Lofoten Islands. Each place offers a glimpse into the mind blowing migrations, resilience and adaptation, the elemental choreography of life between earth, sea and sky.

From workshops to one-to-one mentoring, my seabird photography courses are designed to help others connect deeply with nature and tell meaningful stories through their images. I teach how to photograph seabirds ethically and creatively, from understanding behaviour and light to the challenges of working at the wildest of edges.

Ocean Advocacy

the power of visual storytelling

Together, photography and storytelling hold the power to help us unravel what we know and reimagine what is possible. My seabird photography work lives in that space, where art becomes advocacy and images become catalysts for change.

Through my camera, I seek to illuminate both the wonder and the warning written across our changing seas, translating beauty into awareness and awareness into action.

My practice weaves visual storytelling with ocean advocacy, creating work that sparks conversation and drives impact, from international recognition at Ocean Photographer of the Year to collaborative exhibitions and campaigns for change. Each project is a reminder that stories can shift perception, and perception can shape the future.

A haunting scene at Noss Island, Shetland. In that moment, I made a vow to this bird that its death would not be in vain. Hanging Gannet became a visual catalyst for conversation around the devastating impact of discarded fishing gear, its story shared across the world as a symbol of the urgent need to protect marine life from the silent threat of ghost gear.

Seabirds are messengers of the ocean.

Seabirds are messengers of the ocean. Their presence, movements and mirror the health of our seas, barometers for how much pressure it is under. From puffins and guillemots to kittiwakes and gannets, these birds weave invisible threads between continents. Carrying stories of abundance and loss. Photographing them is not only an artistic pursuit but a form of advocacy. An act of bearing witness.

Through my lens, I seek to honour their role as indicators of change and ambassadors of hope. Reminding us that we are part of this same ecosystem, bound by the elements we share.

Behind the lens

Photographing seabirds ethically

Ethics are at the heart of my practice. I work with deep respect for the wildlife I photograph and prioritise the wellbeing of the birds and nature protection above the image. Ethical field work is not a limitation but a creative boundary. It deepens presence, patience and integrity.

Through my work and education, I advocate for best practices in wildlife photography to ensure that the act of documenting never becomes disturbance. True storytelling honours the subject; it does not extract from it.

Snorkelling with Puffins and Seals: An Unforgettable Skomer Island Adventure

Stories from below the surface

My seabird photography work takes me to seek out lesser seen perspectives of our magnificent sea birds and witness them underwater. These encounters reveal the grace and adaptability of seabirds beneath the waves. Sharing the force which gannets pierce the surface and how all seabirds swim beneath the sea.

My underwater photography has taken me to snorkel with diving gannets off Noss Island one of Shetland Islands, to Flatey Islands in Iceland to snorkel with puffins and fulmar and to Skomer Island in Pembrokeshire, Wales to snorkel with puffins. This perspective adds a new dimension to seabird storytelling. Connecting people to the wonders of our blue planet, the heart that sustains all life on Earth.

The science behind the stories

My work sits where storytelling and science meet. I am endlessly curious and ground my admiration for seabirds in scientific understanding which shapes my visual practice. With a degree in geography and postgraduate in marine protected areas, I always want to know more about what I witness in the field. I am forever a student. Devoted to learning more about interpreting behavioural patterns, understand habitats, so I can embed data-driven insight within creative storytelling.

This fusion of science and art allows me to create imagery that connects emotion with evidence. Helping people feel the science as much as they see it. The result is storytelling that is both poetic and purposeful. Imagery that inspires connection and catalyses change.
