The unique power of drone and video: capturing the unseen at the wild edge

The wild edge ignites curiosity, a liminal space where the untamed meets the unseen. Each time I take to the sky, I trust in the alchemy of the moment with a curious eye. My imagination is captivated and inspires my drone photo and video work. These transitional zones of the natural world hold stories that often go unnoticed, hidden from view at ground level. The power of drone and video is a vital tool. I strive to illuminate these unseen perspectives. Offering a glimpse into the beauty, complexity, and interconnectedness of our planet’s wildest places.

What is the wild edge?

The wild edge represents more than just a physical boundary. It’s the meeting point of contrasting forces. Land and sea, sky and earth, chaos and calm. These spaces are inherently liminal, holding an untamed energy that feels alive with possibility. Wild edges can be coastal cliffs battered by waves, mountain peaks rising into the clouds, or dense forests teeming with life. They are places that evoke awe and curiosity, inviting us to explore and reflect on the natural world’s raw beauty.

The power of drone and video content allows us to capture these spaces in ways that traditional perspectives can’t. By soaring above, we gain a unique vantage point that reveals patterns, textures and stories. Etched into the landscape, stories that might otherwise remain hidden.

Revealing the unseen through drone imagery

Drones have revolutionised how we experience and document the natural world. Through their unique power and ability to hover, ascend and manoeuvre into hard-to-reach areas, drones uncover powerful perspectives that are impossible to see from the ground.

For example, aerial views can reveal:

  • The intricate symmetry of tidal pools along a rugged coastline.
  • Hidden trails carved by wildlife through dense vegetation.
  • The swirling eddies of a river as it meets the open sea.

This ability to reveal the unseen transforms not only how we view these spaces but also how we understand and connect with them. Drones to me are magickal. They acts as a bridge, connecting us to the world in ways we could never imagine. Helping us appreciate the beauty of the wild edge.

1. Misty Thanet

In this ethereal scene over Thanet, the drone captures a world transformed by mist. From above, the coastal town becomes an abstract interplay of light, shadow, and fog, revealing the dynamic relationship between land and weather. The wild edge here lies in the contrast between human-made structures and the encroaching natural elements, reminding us of how fragile and transient our presence is when faced with nature’s shifting moods. This perspective would be impossible to grasp from the ground, where mist obscures rather than reveals.

2. Polzeath Beach from Above

The power of drone and video is evident in this aerial view of Polzeath, showcasing the meeting point of golden sand and turquoise waters. Featuring a solitary figure offering scale and a sense of solitude. From the ground, this beach might feel expansive, but the drone reveals a unique intimacy in the relationship between land and sea. The wild edge here is the merging of human and natural worlds, seen through the vibrant colours and patterns only visible from above. It’s a reminder of how aerial storytelling can highlight the textures and tones that define a landscape.

3. Ramsgate Wild Swimming

Captured at the edge of the tide, this image transforms the shoreline into a living canvas of swirling currents and shifting colours. The drone reveals the power of intricate details of sediment, seaweed, and the swimmer’s small yet powerful presence in the vastness of the ocean. The wild edge here is the moment where human resilience meets the untamed rhythm of the sea. A perspective that emphasises our connection to and insignificance within nature’s grand design.

4. Humpback Whales in Iceland

This breathtaking shot of three humpback whales in the deep waters of Iceland’s Westfjords showcases the sheer majesty of these marine giants. From above, the drone captures the subtle trails of bubbles. Ripples they leave behind, revealing a choreography of movement that is invisible from the surface. The wild edge here lies in the untouched expanse of ocean and the delicate balance of life within it. The power of drone and video allows us to bear witness to these moments without intrusion. In doing so, offering a rare and humbling perspective on the beauty of marine life.

Drones and storytelling at the wild edge

Every wild edge holds a story waiting to be told and my drone is my tool for sharing these narratives. One of my favourite spaces to explore totally embodies liminality. The shifting sands and tidal rhythms of the Kent coastline, where I grew up. From above, the interplay between land and sea becomes a living and dynamic artwork. Different on every tide, reflecting the constant changes of erosion and renewal.

Another memorable moment was filming the dramatic basalt cliffs in Iceland. Their sharp contrasts brought to life by the drone’s sweeping aerial shots. These images not only showcase the landscape’s grandeur but also highlight the vulnerability of these edges in the face of climate change.

By sharing the power of drone and video perspectives, I hope to spark a deeper appreciation for the wild places that connect us to nature’s raw, unfiltered beauty.

By illuminating the liminal space where myth, magick and intellect meet, we ignite collective curiosity, enchantment and awe to empower the healing of people and planet.

My work as a photographer and ocean storyteller has taken me from the wild coasts of Scotland to the wild edges of Iceland.

It was with immense gratitude and a sense of deepening purpose that a story I captured gain 2nd Place in the Conservation (Impact) category for Ocean Photographer of the Year 2024.

As a trustee of Whale Wise and a Marine Mammal Medic with BDMLR, I advocate for our blue planet through powerful visuals and purpose-driven narratives.

Together, let’s embrace the wild edges where of people, place, and planet meet.
