Wales Photography is truly something to behold. Capturing the rugged landscapes from the rolling hills of Brecon Beacons, to the summit of Snowdon, to the dramatic coastline of Pembrokeshire, provides ever-changing scenes that enchant the curious eye and ignite creativity. As you journey through the Welsh countryside, the shifting light paints each scene with a unique hue, offering countless opportunities to capture the spirit of this mystical land. If we open our hearts, it seeks to reminds us of unwavering connection to nature. The rhythmic crash of waves against ancient cliffs and the whisper of the wind through dense forests infuse each moment rewilding our connection to nature, as part of nature.
Islands – life at the wild edge
Shaped by the rhythms of the sea and sky, these islands offer a glimpse into the raw, untamed beauty of nature, where every season brings its own stories of survival and majesty.
Life on the edge of the Atlantic…
Off the coast of Pembrokeshire in Wales sit two islands. These islands stand as sanctuaries of natural wonder and biodiversity: Grassholme and Skomer.
Grassholme Island is a remote and rugged outcrop. It is also a haven for one of the largest colonies of gannets in the world. Their striking white forms contrasting against the green slopes and rocky cliffs.
In contrast, just a short distance away, Skomer Island reveals a different world. Where the land bursts into vibrant wildflower life. Additionally, the air thrums with the sounds of puffins and Manx shearwaters, as well as countless other seabirds.
The waters surrounding Skomer Island are mesmerising, teeming with life and bursting with colour. It was here, off the coast of Skomer that I snorkelled with seals and puffins. An absolutely epic experience and one of my highlights as a storyteller of nature.
Explore the wild edges
It wasn’t long before I encountered the island’s most enchanting residents: Atlantic grey seals. Their sleek, silver bodies moving with effortless grace, eyes curious and intelligent as they regarded me with mild interest.
Meanwhile, puffins darted past with surprising speed. However, underwater, their movements were a ballet of agility and precision, a stark contrast to their comical waddle on land.
These resilient birds, with their brightly coloured beaks and striking plumage, seemed to be in constant motion, diving for fish and returning to the surface with their catch. Indeed, their stamina was purely spectacular and the experience was nothing short of epic. Each moment spent snorkelling off Skomer Island felt like an intimate encounter with nature.
I felt so privileged to have witnessed this beauty. Ultimately, Wales photography is a constant reminder of the hidden worlds that thrive just below the surface, where the world turns dark and wild edges of water and land meet.

Take to the seas & visit Grassholm Island
Dramatic journeys…
Grassholm Island is a remote haven for nature. Located off the coast of Wales, it is home to the third-largest gannet population in the world. As a result, it is a globally important site for seabirds.
Our journey to this sanctuary was nothing short of exhilarating. Almost immediately, dolphins quickly surfaced as we braved wild swells, rapidly increasing to 2-3m to reach its rugged shores. Along the way, we encountered the mesmerising sight of thousands of rafting Manx shearwaters en route. This area supports the world’s largest breeding Manx shearwater who nest here between Feb – July. Before they make a huge journey to winter off the coast of South America! The distance sea birds travel is something that literally blows my mind every time I pause to think about it!
As you approach Grassholm Island, you are guided in by companies of gannets flying together. Some of which are in lines of as many as 20-30, others in groups. Before you know it, you are immersed in the utter chaos. The island buzzes with the energy of over 39,000 pairs of these majestic beings!
Our visit was crowned with a spectacular natural phenomenon. A 22-degree halo encircling the sun, casting an ethereal glow to silhouette the sky full of gannets against. This stunning optical spectacle is caused by the refraction of light, through ice crystals in the atmosphere. Understandably, a fitting tribute to the untamed beauty of Grassholm Island.
