When the sea starts to freeze: The beauty of winter & a frozen Camber Sands
One freezing morning at the start of January 2025, wrapped in thermal layers against the biting cold, I found myself standing on a very frozen Camber Sands at sunrise. The scene was otherworldly, the seascape transformed by the interplay of light, water and temperature. I was staying at a breathtaking holiday home, Casa Blanca – hosted by Camber Holiday Cottages and The Massey Partnership, which is right on the beach at Camber Sands. I stepped out onto the balcony into a winter wonderland, everything the cold air had met overnight was covered in such a heavy frost. With great excitement and anticipation, I got ready as quickly as possible and made my way to the beach.
I was instantly intrigued by the wispy patterns rising from the surface of the sea. As the sun began to rise, it illuminated the sea in a way I’d never seen in the UK before, the surface seemed alive, covered in delicate, squiggly vapour trails that glowed bright orange as the first rays of light spilled over the horizon. It was as though the sea itself was breathing, exhaling into the frigid air.
This liminal moment, ephemeral and extraordinary, was shaped not just by the cold snap gripping the UK, but by the unique geography of Camber Sands itself. This vast, wide bay lies in the lee of the longshore drift at Dungeness, creating a sheltered environment where the sea’s surface can remain flat calm. On this particular morning, there was virtually no wind, leaving the water utterly still, apart from slow undulating swell rolling in, a range of conditions had to aligned in this moment and created such a mesmerising display.
Awe-inspired by this experience, I wanted to explore the science behind why the sea behaves this way during a cold snap and illuminate just how rare it is to see this and how it connects us to the deeper rhythms of winter.
Why does the sea freeze?
Unlike freshwater, seawater doesn’t freeze as easily because of its salt content. The salinity lowers its freezing point to around -1.8°C (28.8°F), depending on the concentration. As the temperature drops, freshwater in the seawater begins to form ice, leaving behind saltier water. This dense, salty brine sinks, which helps keep the unfrozen water moving, making it harder for the surface to freeze entirely.
In coastal areas like Camber Sands, you’re more likely to see the edges of pools of water on the sand left by the tide or shallow waters freezing before the open sea. These areas lose heat faster due to their smaller volume and shallower depth.
The science behind vapour trails on a frozen sea
The stunning vapour trails I saw this morning are a result of a phenomenon called sea smoke or steam fog. This occurs when the sea remains relatively warm compared to the frigid air above it. The warm water evaporates and as the moisture rises into the colder air, it cools rapidly and condenses, forming those ethereal wisps of steam.
To create sea smoke, the air temperature generally needs to be at least 10°C colder than the water surface temperature. During extreme cold snaps, like the one currently gripping the UK, this temperature differential is amplified, creating the perfect conditions for sea smoke to occur.
At Camber Sands, the bay’s shelter and stillness were crucial in creating this phenomenon. The absence of wind allowed the vapour trails to remain intact, snaking across the water like tendrils of breath. As the sun rose, its light refracted through the vapour, transforming these fleeting trails into fiery orange streaks, as if the sea itself was igniting in celebration of the dawn.

Deep winter and the wisdom of stillness
Winter, especially in its harshest moments, is often seen as a time of dormancy and scarcity. Yet, it is during these cold snaps, when the air bites and the sea exhales, that nature reveals its raw, untamed beauty.
Deep winter invites us to pause and embrace stillness, much like the sea at sunrise. It’s a time to reflect, to go inward, and to recognise that growth often happens in the quiet, unseen moments. Just as the sea transforms in the cold, so too can we find transformation in this season of rest.
Watching the vapour trails dance across the horizon that morning, I couldn’t help but feel that winter itself was breathing alongside me, a synchronised rhythm of resilience and renewal.
A reminder to witness the wild
Moments like this sunrise remind us of the importance of being open to liminal moments that unfold in the world around us, especially when the weather seems harsh or uninviting. Deep winter has a way of revealing truths we might otherwise overlook, whether in the science of sea smoke or the symbolism of the season.
The magick of waking up in the beautiful space of Casa Blanca at Camber Sands, overlooking the sheltered bay and still waters, was a morning and moments in nature that are etched on my heart forever. The sea, even as it freezes or steams, whispers messages from the wild edges and calls us to rewild our connection with nature. It reminds us that beneath the stillness, life is always in motion and beauty can be found in unexpected moments, waiting to be witnessed in the coldest corners of the year.
So, as the cold snap continues, take a moment to witness the magic of winter’s touch. Whether it’s vapour trails over the sea, frost-covered fields or the crisp clarity of a star-filled night, nature has a way of showing us how to endure—and thrive—in the stillness.
