Celebrating the Ocean Photographer of the Year 2024: Magazine, Book, and Exhibition

It’s been an extraordinary year for ocean photography, and I’m so excited to share the news about three incredible opportunities to see my work as part of the Ocean Photographer of the Year 2024 competition: a special edition magazine, a stunning coffee table book, and an exhibition in Sydney. Each of these represents a celebration of the ocean’s beauty and fragility and the importance of protecting our blue planet.

The story behind my image

One of the highlights of my year was seeing my image of a gannet, captured during a remarkable cold-water snorkelling session in Shetland, recognised in the competition. This photograph gained second place in the Conservation and Impact category, a moment of immense pride for me.

The lifeless gannet hangs from the deadly snare of ghost fishing gear—discarded nets and lines that silently continue to wreak havoc on marine ecosystems. These forgotten remnants of human activity drift through the ocean. Trapping and killing countless marine animals and seabirds, long after their intended use has ended. This haunting scene speaks to the devastating consequences of our throwaway culture and the urgent need to address ocean pollution. Gannets, majestic and powerful hunters of the sea, should be soaring through the skies, not meeting their end in a tragic tangle of human negligence. It is a sobering reminder of the responsibility we have to protect and restore our oceans for the life they sustain.

To have this image recognised in a category dedicated to conservation and impact was not only an honour but also a validation of the role visual storytelling plays in amplifying the urgent need for marine protection.
