Chasing Fallstreak Clouds: A Moment of Awe on the A14
On Friday, en route back from shoots and mega dreaming and scheming with my team, I stumbled across a rare cloud phenomenon I’d always wanted to see! While driving down the A1, I spotted something strange in the clouds ahead of me, there was a huge gap with what looked like a jellyfish kind of shape, my heart instantly started racing with the rush of curiosity, could this really be a fallstreak cloud?! These delicate, ethereal cloud formations, sometimes called “hole punch” clouds, looked like a tear in the sky and that was exactly what I was looking at!
I carried on driving south and was looking for somewhere to stop. I joined the A14 from the A1, the cloud formation was still there but unlike the gap in the clouds, there wasn’t a gap in the road appearing – ‘where are all of the junctions’ – I shouted to myself!! In case you hadn’t realised, I have a bit of a passion for meteorology, there is so much wisdom being beamed to us in the clouds and elements around us and I love to tune into this!
For what felt like ages, I watched the rare cloud formation formation linger overhead, wishing I could pull over and really take it all in, and of course get a photo! The clouds lingered above, until finally, a junction opened up. I pulled over and quickly grabbed my camera, hoping to capture the fleeting moment before it disappeared. And I did—just before the fallstreak clouds began to fade, leaving only the memory of their delicate formation in the evening sky.

What Are Fallstreak Clouds?
For those who might not be familiar with this rare phenomenon, fallstreak clouds occur when ice crystals form in a thin, cool layer of clouds, causing a portion of the cloud to collapse and evaporate. The result is a distinctive “hole” or “streak” in the cloud layer that looks like something from a dream.
These clouds are not common, which is why witnessing one feels like such a special, almost otherworldly experience. They’re often mistaken for UFO sightings because of their perfect circular or elliptical shapes, but rest assured, they’re all natural.
A Reminder to Stay Present
Seeing fallstreak clouds was a reminder to me of the importance of staying present and open to the beauty that surrounds us, even in the most unexpected places—like a long stretch of the A14. It’s easy to get caught up in the destination, in what we’re trying to achieve or get done, but moments like these invite us to pause, even if only for a second, to remember the wonders of the world we inhabit.
I may have been driving somewhere, but in that moment, the journey became the destination.
So, here’s to more unexpected encounters with nature’s beauty, and to making time to stop, look up, and witness the magic that’s often just above us, waiting to be noticed.

Capturing the Moment
I’m grateful that I managed to pull over and capture the fallstreak clouds before they vanished. It reminded me of why I do what I do—creating visual stories that connect us to the planet, and sometimes to phenomena that make us feel small, in the best possible way. Nature has a way of speaking to us, and on this drive, it surprised me with this moment to witness something I’d always wanted to see!
Have you ever witnessed a fallstreak cloud or any other rare weather phenomenon? I’d love to hear your story!
