Finding solid ground: Reflections from the liminal space of deep winter
For those of us driven by purpose and the desire to create positive change, the endless doing can sometimes overshadow the deeper why of our work. In these shortest days of the year, nature invites us to pause. To sink into the liminal space and deep rest of winter, where the urgent doing of warmer months gives way to quiet reflection.
It’s in this liminal space – between the year that was and the year that will be – that we can truly see the impact of our work and the shape of our purpose emerging.
As changemakers, conscious brands and purpose-driven organisations, we all share this journey of trying to create meaningful impact in a world that desperately needs it.
Whether you’re a B-Corp working to reshape business for good. An environmental organisation fighting for conservation or a conscious brand supporting people on their journey of transformation and building community change, you know that every story has the potential to spark transformation.
As a visual storyteller partnering with purpose-driven brands, I’ve learned that impact often finds us in unexpected moments. We stand ready with our cameras, but we never quite know when we’ll be called to witness something profound. When those moments come, they leave an indelible mark. Not just on us, but on all those who encounter the story.
The power of unexpected moments
This year brought one such moment on the cliffs of Noss Island in Shetland. What began as a wildlife photography trip to capture the UK’s largest seabird colony became a stark encounter with environmental reality.
Finding a gannet entangled in ghost fishing gear transformed a standard shoot into an urgent call to action. A visual story that needed to reach beyond traditional conservation audiences to create real change.
That single image went on to win recognition in the Ocean Photographer of the Year awards, coming second in the Conservation and Impact category. Helping me to amplify a critical message about marine conservation to a global audience.
For purpose-driven brands and organisations, this illustrates the power of being ready when these moments of truth present themselves. Sometimes the most impactful stories aren’t the ones we plan, but the ones we’re prepared to witness and share from liminal spaces.

The rising urgency of purpose-driven storytelling
As storytellers and conscious brands, we stand on the front lines of change. We never know when these pivotal liminal space moments will present themselves. But when they do, we carry the collective responsibility to amplify what we’ve witnessed.
This year has connected me with many purpose-led visionaries whose work is actively reshaping our future.
For conscious brands and organisations, this reinforces the importance of authentic visual storytelling in your impact strategy. When you begin doing work that creates real change, there’s a rising sense of urgency. A recognition that your story isn’t just about business success, but about inspiring collective action for positive change.

Finding solid ground in purpose
This year has been transformative. Like many journeys of growth and change, it often felt like navigating uncertain terrain or trying to fit into spaces not yet shaped for impact-focused work. But by remaining open to creative possibility and embracing liminal spaces – those threshold moments between what was and what could be – something remarkable has emerged.
For conscious brands and changemakers, this might resonate with your own journey. Perhaps you’ve felt like walking in quicksand, fighting against traditional business models or outdated metrics of success. The path to impact isn’t always linear, but when we find our solid ground – that clear sense of purpose and direction – everything shifts.
Amplifying impact in 2025
As we look toward the year ahead, the opportunity for purpose-driven visual storytelling has never been more vital. For conscious brands and organisations, this is the moment to amplify your impact story. To share your vision for positive change and to inspire others to join your mission.
This clarity brings with it new opportunities to evolve and grow.
Impact isn’t something we can force. It emerges from authentic alignment between purpose and action. This past year has shown that when we remain open to possibility and evolution. We naturally move toward more meaningful, purpose-led work.
The collective power of purpose-driven stories
As we move through the liminal space of winter, I’m reminded that our role – whether as storytellers, conscious brands or changemakers – is not just to document, but to illuminate, advocate and amplify.
To shine light on those liminal space stories that matter. To amplify the voices working for change and advocate to shape narratives that can transform our world. Whether you’re a:
- B-Corp documenting your impact journey
- Environmental organisation sharing conservation stories
- Conscious brand supporting people on their journey of transformation and building community change
- Changemaker reshaping systems for good
Every story you share has the potential to spark awareness and inspire action. This is the true power of purpose-driven visual storytelling. Not just to show what is, but to illuminate what could be.
Moving forward together

As we look to the light’s slow return and our emergence from winter’s contemplation and liminal space, we get to be part of a collective energy among purpose-driven organisations and conscious brands. The year ahead holds new opportunities. To amplify important messages, support purpose-driven change and create meaningful impact through authentic visual storytelling.
