The nostalgia of Thanet beach huts: Freerange fun by the sea
I was born by the sea and am a proud coastliner. As a radically authentic brand and lifestyle photographer, my connection to nature is a core part of my identity. I’m never happier than when I’m near water, whether I’m out on my paddleboard, snorkelling underwater or gazing across the horizon from one of Thanet’s iconic beach huts.
Thanet beach huts: Part of my summer story
There’s something undeniably charming about beach huts. And since I was little, they’ve been part of my summer story. These quaint, colourful structures lining the Thanet coast evoke a sense of nostalgia. Transporting us to simpler times when days were spent in the sun. Enjoying the simple pleasures of sea breeze, melting ice cream and sand between our toes.
Beach huts are more than just a place to shelter from British summertime showers; they’re the heart of a unique seaside community. A place where people can come together to engage in conversation and find solace in the embrace of nature.
Grandma’s Box: A beach hut starter kit
When I was younger, I spent long summers at my grandparents’ beach hut on Viking Bay. As I grew up and remained the grandchild who still lived by the sea, I inherited what’s become known in the family as Grandma’s Box.
This cherished box contained everything needed for a perfect beach hut stay. From buckets and spades to cups, pegs, a tin kettle, string, a shower curtain for modesty when changing and blankets. I inherited the box when my Grandma passed away and I’ve continued to add to it over time. I love that we still use it and how it’s still referred to as Grandma’s Box. Keeping her memory alive through one of her favourite activities; gathering everyone you love together for some freerange fun. And if she had her way with a lottery win, she would have bought a massive house so we could all live together. So a week in a beach hut is as close as I’ll get to that!

Still part of my summer tradition
While I’m on the waitlist for one of my own Thanet beach huts (I’ve been on the list for over 10 years), for many summers, I’d rent a beach hut with my family and friends. It’s become part of our summer tradition. Along with Grandma’s Box, we bring our paddleboards, snorkelling gear, chairs, loungers, a brolly, a table and supplies.
There is no agenda other than chilling out, larking about with the kids and watching the days go by. This year, I’ve bought one of those wheely carts because I have never been a fan of lugging all the stuff from your car and round the bays! I’ll just need to make sure I don’t take too much down, as it is so easy to suddenly have loads to pack at the end!

5 Reasons you can’t beat spending time in a beach hut
A sense of community:
Beach huts instil a strong sense of community. There’s an unspoken camaraderie among beach hutters. A shared understanding of the joy these simple days bring. Nestled side by side, these little retreats form a vibrant, close-knit neighbourhood. Families often return year after year, occupying the same huts and creating lasting bonds with their neighbours. As the day unfolds, you’ll often see groups gathering, sharing stories, laughter, and, of course, cups of tea. It’s a place where everyone feels a sense of belonging.
Gathering people together:
One of the most enchanting aspects of beach huts is the way they bring people together. Beach huts are perfect for hosting impromptu gatherings as friends and family congregate around makeshift picnic tables, sharing meals, snacks and engaging in conversations. Moments like these are the essence of beach hut life – simple yet so fulfilling.
Having meaningful conversations:
In our fast-paced, digital world, finding time for meaningful, antidotal conversations can be challenging. Beach huts provide the perfect backdrop for soul-nourishing dialogues. Away from the hustle of day-to-day life, you feel more relaxed and open. The natural, expansive surroundings encourage introspection and honest exchanges. In beach huts, conversations aren’t just about passing time but about connecting on a deeper level, sharing experiences.
Being immersed in nature:
Being in a beach hut basically means being immersed in nature. With the doors wide open, the beauty of the seaside is ever-present, with its sights and sounds. Immersion in nature has a therapeutic effect. Helping to unwind, recharge and reimagine. The simplicity of life in a beach hut encourages a slower pace and the opportunity to find joy in the small things.
A nostalgic escape:
For me and many others who grew up living or holidaying by the sea, Thanet beach huts are a nostalgic escape. A reminder of childhood summers. Building sandcastles, collecting shells and exploring rock pools. Not forgetting the ice creams! They represent a time where there were summers felt endless and it is pure magick to step back into that for a week!
