How to celebrate Autumn Equinox
Autumn equinox marks the moment the light and dark meet in perfect balance. For a brief pause, day and night hold equal weight before the tilt carries us deeper into darkness. It’s a time of transition, gratitude and letting go. In the seasonal wheel of the year, autumn equinox is often known as Mabon. Traditionally, it is a second harvest festival. A time to reflect on what has ripened in our lives and what we are ready to release. Celebrating this moment doesn’t have to be elaborate. It’s about tuning in to what the season is offering, in the land, in your body and in the stories you’re carrying. Read on to explore how to celebrate autumn equinox.
What is the autumn equinox?
In the northern hemisphere, autumn equinox usually falls around 22nd or 23rd September, when the sun crosses the celestial equator. It marks the official start of astronomical autumn. From this point on, the nights will grow longer than the days, guiding us into the quieter, darker half of the year. It is a time of equal light and shadow, both in the sky and within. That balance is the medicine of this moment.

How to celebrate autumn equinox
There’s no single way to mark this seasonal turning but here are some gentle, intentional ways how to honour the shift and celebrate autumn equinox:
1. spend time in nature
Walk where the land is changing. Notice how the light feels different. Look for seed heads, ripening fruit, birds on the move. Let your senses guide you into the present moment.
2. create a harvest altar
Gather seasonal items that speak to this moment. For example, fallen leaves, conkers, blackberries, apples and seed pods. Add objects that represent your own personal harvests, like photos, symbols, journal pages or pieces of work you’ve completed.
3. reflect on balance
Ask yourself:
- Where am I holding too much?
- Where do I need more light?
- What can I let go of now, to make space for what’s next?
Write, draw or speak your reflections aloud. This is a moment of deep integration.

4. cook with seasonal ingredients
Celebrate what the land is offering, apples, squash, root vegetables, late summer berries. Make a meal that honours both abundance and gratitude.
5. begin to slow down
Let the pace of your life gently shift with the season. As the light fades, it’s natural to draw inward. You don’t have to leap into autumn, just begin to soften your edges.
6. share a moment with others
Whether around a fire, a table or a message thread with your soul mate who lives miles away, take time to connect and honour the turning. This is a beautiful time to gather in community, even briefly.
Autumn equinox in the wheel of the year
In the wheel of the year, autumn equinox sits opposite spring equinox. Both points of balance, but facing different directions. While spring asks us to grow and reach, autumn invites us to gather and root.
This is the season of turning inward, of trusting the cycle, of knowing that letting go is part of the rhythm. The trees don’t mourn their leaves, they trust what comes next.

Seasonal rituals for mabon
- Light a candle at sunrise and sunset to honour the balance
- Gather leaves and write what you’re releasing on them, then return them to the earth
- Press seasonal flowers, berries or foliage into your journal or sketchbook
- Create a gratitude list from the summer just gone
- Collect seeds to plant next spring
Final thoughts
Celebrating the autumn equinox is about realignment. It’s a reminder that nature moves in cycles, not straight lines. That rest is part of the rhythm. That shedding is sacred.
In a world that rushes, this moment offers a breath. A pause to notice, feel and honour the dance of light and dark within and around you.
