Autumn activities to immerse in nature: Getting outside this season

Autumn invites us into presence. As the light softens and the air begins to shift, autumn offers an invitation, not to rush, but to root. To step outside not for productivity, but for connection. To walk slower and notice more. Moving with the pace of the season, not in spite of it. Whether you live near woods, coast, parkland or pavements lined with leaves, autumn gives us so many ways to immerse ourselves in the natural world. This blog shares autumn activities to immerse in nature. Meeting the outdoors with openness, curiosity and seasonal rhythm.

Outdoor activities to connect with nature in autumn

1. Walk at golden hour

Autumn light arrives at gentler hours. Head out just after sunrise or before sunset to bathe in the soft, low light that makes everything, hedgerows, spiderwebs, your own breath, glow.

2. Track the turning trees

Choose a local tree and visit it weekly through the season. Notice the shift in leaf colour, the shape of the canopy, the sound of the wind through its branches. Let these autumn activities become a seasonal anchor point to immerse in nature.

3. Go barefoot (while you still can)

If it’s safe and warm enough, try grounding on grass, soil or sand. Even a few minutes with your feet on the earth can help regulate your nervous system and shift your mood.

4. Harvest with your senses

Pick blackberries. Gather conkers. Smell the air after rain. Let your senses lead, they know how to bring you back into the body, back into the moment.

5. Forage mindfully

Another autumn activity to immerse in nature is foraging, mindfully. Whether you’re gathering rosehips, sloes or just fallen leaves for your altar, practice gratitude with each thing you take. Leave plenty for the birds, insects and wild others who call this season home.

6. Watch migrating birds

Autumn is full of movement and activities to immerse in nature. Take time to watch the skies, the hedgerows, the shorelines. Birds are gathering, calling, shifting. Let their rhythm speak to your own.

7. Sit and listen

Take a flask and a blanket, and go sit outside. No phone. No pressure. Just the sounds of wind, wings, maybe rain. Let the quiet work on you.

8. Take your creativity outside

Sketch leaves. Photograph seed heads. Write a poem in a notebook perched on your knees. Let nature co-create with you.

9. Beachcomb or forest wander

Coastal and woodland walks offer different stories in autumn. Look for washed-up seaweed, bleached driftwood, mushroom rings, fallen pine cones. Follow what pulls your curiosity.

10. Mark the season with a small ritual

Build a tiny altar on a tree stump or shoreline rock. Whisper a wish to the wind. Walk a spiral into fallen leaves. These gestures connect us to more-than-human time. Click here for 10 rituals to celebrate the Autumn Equinox.

You don’t have to go far to feel the shift. Even a ten-minute walk with attention can reconnect you to the season. These autumn activities to immerse in nature aren’t about epic adventures or curated content. It’s about presence, participation, and remembering that we are nature too.
