The deeper meaning of Autumn Equinox

Mabon, or autumn equinox, is a time of year that is much adored, cosy season is gracing us once more. It is a cosmic threshold, the point where light and dark hang in perfect balance, before the days tip into the darker half of the year. This balance isn’t static. It is a fleeting moment, reminding us that equilibrium is always shifting. The deeper meaning of autumn equinox invites us to reflect on where we hold too much, where we hold too little, and how we can live in closer harmony with our own natural cycles.

The energetics of mabon

Every seasonal point in the wheel of the year carries its own energetic signature. For Mabon, this energy is about:

  • Harvest and gratitude: Celebrating what has come to fruition, both in nature and in life.
  • Release and preparation: Letting go of what no longer serves, to create space for winter’s rest.
  • Balance and reflection: Recognising the equal pull of light and dark, both within and without.

The equinox energy is a soft but powerful force. It invites you to slow down, to ground, and to trust that the cycle of life includes moments of both abundance and surrender.

Mabon as the second harvest

Traditionally, Mabon is known as the second harvest festival, sitting between Lughnasadh (the first harvest) and Samhain (the final harvest). It is the time when fruits ripen, grains are stored, and the natural world begins its descent into winter’s quiet.

In our lives, the deeper meaning of the autumn equinox is recognising the “harvest” of our efforts. As well as the projects, relationships or personal growth that have matured over the brighter months. It is also a time to honour the work of others. The unseen hands, both human and natural, that contribute to the abundance we enjoy.

The spiritual symbolism of autumn equinox

The deeper meaning of autumn equinox lies in accepting both light and shadow. As days shorten, this turning teaches us that darkness is not something to fear, it is a space for integration, dreaming and renewal.

Mabon’s energetics also invite gratitude for what has been and trust for what is to come. It is a time for taking stock, celebrating the beauty of what you’ve achieved while acknowledging what you may need to release before the year closes.

Rituals to connect with Mabon energy

To work with the energetics of Mabon, try rituals that focus on balance, grounding and gratitude:

  • Meditate at sunrise and sunset to honour the balance of light and dark
  • Journal on what you’ve “harvested” in your life this year, and what you are ready to release
  • Collect natural elements (acorns, leaves, berries) to create a seasonal altar
  • Light a candle for gratitude, naming what you’re thankful for
  • Take a walk and notice the signs of transition, falling leaves, migrating birds, cooling air

Why this balance matters

In a world that often pushes us to keep going, the deeper meaning of autumn equinox (mabon) is an invitation to pause. To step back and witness the cyclical nature of time, creativity and life itself. Balance is not a place we arrive at, but a rhythm we learn to move with.

By honouring this seasonal turning, we remind ourselves that letting go is as sacred as growth, and that both are necessary for renewal.
