Seasonality at Autumn Equinox: Connecting with nature

Autumn equinox is a whisper. A pause between inhale and exhale. The moment the scales balance, light and dark, growth and rest, outer and inner. Nature knows what to do here. So do we, if we listen. This is the time of crossing, of shifting, softening and sensing the season’s change not as loss, but as guidance. In nature, everything is in motion. Birds lift off, leaves let go, creatures prepare for stillness. And in all of it, there is wisdom. We’ve just forgotten how to hear it and experience seasonality at Autumn Equinox.

Migrations, murmurations and arrivals on the wind

Some of the most breathtaking transformations in the UK begin around this time of year:

  • Brent geese arrive from the Arctic to winter along our estuaries and coastal mudflats
  • Swallows and house martins begin their epic journey south to Africa
  • Redwings and fieldfares cross the North Sea to feast on hawthorn and rowan
  • Whooper swans arrive from Iceland, their calls echoing across the fens
  • Starlings begin to gather, readying for their dusk dances the murmurations of winter’s breath

Each of these movements is an act of deep, ancestral knowing. A rhythm written into feathers and instincts. No one tells them it’s time, the light does. The land does.

And we, too, once moved with that knowing and seasonality at Autumn Equinox.

The arctic fox: changing coats, keeping wisdom

Even far north, the arctic fox begins to change. Its russet summer coat gives way to winter white, because its survival depends on blending in.

This colour change is triggered not by temperature, but by day length — photoperiodism. It knows, without knowing, when the light tips toward darkness. And it changes with it.

We may not grow new coats, but our bodies remember. Our energy shifts. Our cravings, sleep, senses and sensitivities all respond to the quiet instruction of the light and seasonality at Autumn Equinox.

nature connection in autumn

You are not separate from this

We’ve been taught to live as if we’re not part of nature, as if our worth depends on constant bloom, perpetual growth, endless productivity.

But the trees are not ashamed to shed.
The geese are not punished for leaving.
The fox does not question its need to change.

You are part of this pattern too. You are allowed to rest, retreat and soften. To say not now as the light dims and gather your energy like roots pulling deep into the earth. Preparing, not performing.

Seasonality at Autumn Equinox as sacred rhythm

Hibernation, migration, decay, framed so negatively in cultures of over productivity but these are not failures of nature. They are its design. Rest is not what happens when you run out of energy. It’s part of the cycle. So is reflection and saying no.

Autumn Equinox reminds us of this, not as a theory, but as a lived, felt rhythm. It’s old wisdom. Root wisdom. The kind whispered by grandmothers and hedgerows, that makes you want to sit by the fire and exhale. The kind that says:

Come in, love. You’ve done enough. Let the season hold you for a while.

Let the land show you how

If you’re longing for reconnection, start here. Walk the same path each week and notice what changes. Listen for bird calls you haven’t heard all summer. Gather windfall apples. Light a candle as dusk creeps in. Let seasonality at Autumn Equinox be your teacher.

My work as a photographer and ocean storyteller has taken me from the wild coasts of Scotland to the wild edges of Iceland.

It was with immense gratitude and a sense of deepening purpose that a story I captured gain 2nd Place in the Conservation (Impact) category for Ocean Photographer of the Year 2024.

As President of the Board of Trustees for Whale Wise and a Marine Mammal Medic with BDMLR, I advocate for our blue planet through powerful visuals and purpose-driven narratives.
