Joss Bay: surf energy and wild-hearted calm – Locations in Thanet
Thanet, perched on the east coast of Kent, is a peninsula wrapped in sea and sky. Just over an hour from London by train or road, it’s home to some of the most varied and evocative coastline in the UK. Golden beaches, chalk cliffs, tidal stories and timeless light. Joss Bay, just north of Broadstairs, is one of Thanet’s largest and most open beaches. Blending wild beauty, rural charm and surf-side spirit, Joss Bay is perfect for brands and creatives who want to feel both grounded and free.
I grew up here. This coast roots me. It’s where I learned to listen to weather, feel light shift, and follow the call of the tide. These places like Joss bay, aren’t just backdrops in my work, they are collaborators in the visual stories I co-create with people, brands and the land itself.

What the landscape is like
Joss Bay is a broad curve of golden sand held by chalk cliffs on either side. With open views out to sea and the soft backdrop of green fields behind, it feels expansive and elemental. The beach is home to Joss Bay Surf School, and that free-spirited, outdoorsy energy is ever-present — gentle and joyful, never crowded or contrived.
Joss Bay is one of my favourite spots to sea swim or paddleboard all year round. There’s something deeply grounding about this place. Feet in the sand, face to the wind, completely immersed in the rhythm of the water.
The Blue Flag beach status and reliable swell make Joss Bay a haven for both experienced and beginner surfers. That movement, that openness, and the mix of chalk cliffs, open beach and wide skies offer a layered canvas for creative work that feels adventurous, raw and real.

Light and tide
Joss Bay faces west, so it catches the golden light of sunset and the soft, rolling hues of late afternoon. The cliffs can create some early shade depending on the time of year, so mid to late golden hour is often the most beautiful window to shoot in.
- Low tide: reveals generous wet sand, tidal textures and expansive space for barefoot movement and wide compositions
- Mid tide: ideal for storytelling that includes surf culture, beach life or the transition of sea meeting land
- High tide: water presses close to the cliffs, offering intimacy and reflection
Joss Bay is a dynamic place, perfect for those looking to work with nature, not against it.

Accessibility and facilities
- Access: Steep slope and steps from the cliff-top car park

Plan for a little extra time getting in and out if carrying equipment — but the effort is always rewarded by the energy of Joss Bay.
