Stone Bay: soft chalk light and timeless stillnes

Thanet sits like a peninsula, once an island and hugged by the sea on three sides and bathed in the ever-changing elements and power of the sea. Just over an hour from London, this coastal stretch offers a rich palette of locations, from wild, weathered edges to nostalgic seaside enclaves. Stone Bay is one of my favourite hidden-in-plain-sight beaches. Tucked just beyond the bustle of Viking Bay in Broadstairs, it offers a slower pace and a softer mood. It’s where morning light lingers longer, reflections ripple gently, and time feels beautifully suspended.

What the landscape is like

Stone Bay is wide and open, backed by chalk cliffs and lined with a run of beach huts in soft coastal hues. At low tide, it reveals expansive golden sands, rock pools and textures that shimmer with seaweed, stone and light.

There’s a nostalgic, almost cinematic stillness here. It’s the kind of place that invites slower breaths and deeper presence, ideal for storytelling that honours clarity, calm and connection.

Light and seasonal shifts at Stone Bay

  • Best light: East-facing, so it’s perfect for sunrise shoots with golden light over the sea.
  • Tide: Low tide offers the widest beach and most texture; high tide reaches the sea wall.
  • Seasons: Early spring and late summer are especially beautiful here — less footfall, more magic in the light.

Practical notes

  • Access: Steps down from the promenade – moderate steepness.
  • Facilities: Seasonal cafés or toilets directly on the beach; Viking Bay amenities a short walk away.
  • Parking: Residential roads or Broadstairs town car parks.
  • Tide watch: Essential to check before planning, as the beach all but disappears at high tide.

Work with me at Stone Bay

There’s a gentleness to Stone Bay that makes it perfect for introspective storytelling — brand shoots that honour presence, founder portraits that reflect emotional depth, or nature-connected editorial imagery.

If you’re drawn to light, line and simplicity, this is a place that lets the story speak clearly.

About me

Hey my love, I’m Rebecca. A visual storyteller, unleashing the power of photo and video to rewilding our connection to nature. I am also an AuDHD – an autistic ADHDer.

By illuminating the liminal space where myth, magick and intellect meet, we ignite collective curiosity, enchantment and awe to empower the healing of people and planet.

My work as a photographer and ocean storyteller has taken me from the wild coasts of Scotland to the wild edges of Iceland.

It was with immense gratitude and a sense of deepening purpose that a story I captured gain 2nd Place in the Conservation (Impact) category for Ocean Photographer of the Year 2024.

As President of the Board of Trustees for Whale Wise and a Marine Mammal Medic with BDMLR, I advocate for our blue planet through powerful visuals and purpose-driven narratives.

Together, let’s embrace the wild edges where of people, place, and planet meet.
