Margate Main Sands: light, legacy and tidal rhythm – Locations in Thanet
Thanet, on Kent’s eastern edge, holds the sea close. A peninsula surrounded on three sides by coastline. Just over an hour from London by train, it’s both accessible and filled with wild beauty, cinematic skies and deeply textured landscapes. Margate Main Sands is the best-known beach in Thanet, with wide golden sands, sweeping sea views and an unmistakable air of nostalgia.
But it also has quiet corners and unexpected light. A place where energy, history and elemental rhythm meet. I grew up here, by the water, chasing the tide lines and sky shifts that now shape my visual storytelling. These beaches are more than backdrops, they’re part of my rhythm, my roots and my creative process.

What the landscape is like
Margate Main Sands is a wide, open beach backed by the town’s historic seafront and the iconic Grade II listed tidal pool. At low tide, the sand stretches far, with ripples and reflections that shimmer under soft skies.
While it’s known for its traditional seaside energy — arcades, ice creams, deckchairs — Margate Main Sands also has beautiful light, long sightlines and timeless textures. Making it a fantastic location for brand shoots with soul and purpose.
Margate’s evolving creative identity, shaped by artists, curators and independent voices, brings another layer to this location. Margate Main Sands is perfect for brands who want to blend authenticity with atmosphere.

Light and tide
Margate Main Sand’s beach faces west, making it one of the best places in Thanet for sunset shoots. The light here is golden, warm and often richly coloured, especially in late spring and autumn. Reflections in the tidal pool and on the wet sand can be breathtaking when conditions align.
At low tide, the beach is vast and open. At high tide, the water comes right up to the sea wall, creating a different kind of intimacy with closer framing and a moody, elemental feel.
