West Bay: soft tide lines and golden calm – Locations in Thanet
Thanet is a coastal peninsula in East Kent, surrounded on three sides by the sea. Just over an hour from London by train, it holds a rare mix of accessibility and wildness. Long beaches, quiet bays, and timeless skies that invite slow living and deeper seeing. This is the coastline that raised me. It’s where I first started noticing how light moves, how weather speaks, how the edges of land and sea hold stories. That awareness has shaped everything I do. West Bay, on the edge of Westgate-on-Sea, is a place I return to often.
There’s a hush to it. A softness. With west-facing sands and a more local, less-touristed energy, it’s a beautiful spot for brand shoots that need space, ease and groundedness.
What the landscape is like
West Bay offers a gently curving stretch of golden sand, framed by low chalk cliffs and backed by a quiet promenade. It’s less dramatic than nearby Botany Bay or Margate, but that’s its power — calm, unassuming, quietly radiant.
The beach is wide at low tide, with sand that holds beautiful ripples, reflective pools and tidal markings. There’s a rockier edge toward the northern end of West Bay that adds texture and variety to compositions, especially in close-ups or low perspectives.
It’s a location that supports shoots where story comes from stillness. West Bay is the ideal location for founders, creatives or nature-connected brands who want their imagery to feel open, soft and honest.

Light and tide
West Bay faces west, making it a sunset haven. Evening light pours in across the tide, softening everything it touches. Even on overcast days, the westerly light brings a subtle warmth and glow to the sand and chalk.
Tide shapes the shoot conditions:
- Low tide reveals wide sand flats and mirror-like reflections
- Mid tide offers gentle waves and textural variety
- High tide creates a more intimate composition, with the sea coming right to the base of the cliffs
Best shooting times at West Bay are golden hour through to dusk, or just after high tide when reflections linger.
Accessibility and facilities
- Access: Sloped pathway and occasional steps from the seafront
- Parking: Free on-street parking nearby, with car parks in Westgate town
- Facilities: Seasonal kiosk, toilets, cafés and pub within walking distance
- Dogs: Restricted from 1 May to 30 Sept, 10am–6pm
West Bay is an easy-to-navigate beach with nearby facilities, making it great for shoot days that need comfort, calm and flexibility.
