Why booking seasonal shoots helps guests imagine their stay year-round

When we think about holiday stays, so often the images we see are of the halcyon days of summer. Golden light pouring through open windows, sun-kissed skin, sea-damp hair, families gathered barefoot on decks as the sun lingers long into the evening. It’s no wonder that these visuals stir something deep in us. They are nostalgic, familiar, idyllic. But they also leave a gap. Read on to explore how booking a seasonal shoot can create year-round demand for your accommodation.

Many accommodation owners feel the shift as autumn arrives, noticing bookings slow and wondering how to keep interest alive. Yet there’s a whole world of potential that remains untapped simply because we’re not showing what a stay could look like beyond the summer glow.

The power of visual storytelling in the off-season

I live in deep alignment with the Wheel of the Year, attuned to the shifting seasons and the energy each brings. For me, autumn and winter are not the end of something, but a new invitation. To rest, reflect, gather and to light candles. As well as cook good food, immerse in a book by the fire, or wake slowly to the sound of wind outside. This is the art of wintering, and it’s rich with story.

If your imagery only shows sunshine and sandals, you’re not giving guests the tools they need to picture themselves with you in January. You’re not showing them what’s possible in October, or the magic that exists in February. A seasonal shoot creates more than images – it sparks imagination.

Create demand with deeper connection

When I photographed weddings for over a decade, I saw the same seasonal shoot pattern. Most bookings were from April to September. Autumn hit and the inbox went quiet. But I knew I wanted a sustainable business – and that meant reframing the narrative.

So I learnt how to light scenes in the dark. I honed off-camera flash, leant into the drama of rain and night skies, and built a reputation for capturing magic after sunset. Once, I was called “The Queen of Available Darkness” – and the bookings followed. I became just as in demand in December as in June.

This experience taught me something powerful – people respond to what they can see. When you visually tell stories about what’s possible in autumn and winter, you shift perception. You don’t have to convince, you show. And the right guests will feel it.

Night skies and nature’s rhythm

There’s also something deeply grounding about travelling outside of peak season. Quiet trails, cosy spaces, the absence of crowds. And for some places – especially those in dark sky reserves or rural settings – this is when the skies come alive.

We are currently in a solar maximum, meaning sightings of the aurora borealis are more frequent and further south than usual. I was recently interviewed by CNBC as an early adopter of noctourism – the growing movement of night-time nature exploration. If your property offers sky views, now is the time to start sharing that story with a seasonal shoot.

Show guests how they can slow down. Lean into the rhythm of the season. Come to your place not just for the location, but for how it makes them feel.

Your guests want more than just summer

Ultimately, guests aren’t just buying a night’s stay. They’re buying an experience. A feeling, a shift.

By investing in a seasonal shoot, you’re inviting them to see what’s possible. You’re showing them how your place can hold them all year round, not just when the sun shines. That’s how you move from bookings in summer to a sustainable, year-round business.

If this is something you’re ready to explore, I’d love to help you craft imagery that brings all seasons to life. Get in touch and let’s talk about creating your year-round story.
