On the banks of the River Avon: Holiday park photography at Abbot’s Salford

Each storytelling project starts long before the photography shoot day. There is a foundation of knowledge that I build. Getting to know the geography of the landscape, how the light will move across the day, where the sun rises and falls, what phase the moon is in and where it might appear, what makes this particular place unlike anywhere else. This all helps me attune my senses to the place, before arriving at Abbot’s Salford holiday park, nestled on the banks of the River Avon. Meaning the holiday park photography shoot in Worcestershire felt more deeply connected and attuned with the light and landscape.

The river traces its route

Through the forty acres side which has a mix of beautiful meadows and meets the edge of ancient woodlands. The Cotswolds are close. Stratford-upon-Avon is a short drive. The Malvern Hills are on the horizon when the weather is clear. And the holiday park has become part of this landscape. A settled character that comes from decades of being genuinely cared for.

Abbot’s Salford is one of the oldest Allens Caravans holiday parks. Established in an era when the family was building something they understood would take generations to realise fully. Capturing holiday park photography here in Worcestershire was a different experience from the coastal sites in Wales.

The landscape brings you into presence

Through noticing details, how the light moves on the water, the birdlife that visits the river banks in fleeting moments and how the weather moves across the vast skies. And the texture, ohhhhh texture. The one that is of the particular quality in middle England, where the fresh cool water of the river meets the warmer air of meadow bringing that haze at first and last light and paints a low glow as the sun rises and falls. Tuning into these elements is all part of the atmosphere that builds the storytelling.

Exploring, staying and experiencing place through storytelling

This is a holiday park with deep roots. Families who have been coming back for years. Residents who chose this stretch of river and kept choosing it. People who know their neighbours, have a regular spot on the fishing pegs, know which evening the clubhouse is best. The staff know it the same way with the kind of easy familiarity that only comes from genuinely caring about a place. Living on site, this place their home too. It was a joy to meet them as part of the shoot. Weaving their story in, bringing such authenticity to this photography co-creation.

The amenities are wonderful. An outdoor heated pool in summer, the bowling green, the clubhouse and bar that has been the social heart of the park across many seasons. River pegs and carp pools where people spend long, unhurried days watching the water and competitions are held each year. These are at the heart of the community of a holiday park. A place that listens to its residents over time and weaves all of this together.

Holiday park photography on the wild edges of the Cotswolds

Aligning the holiday park photography shoot to the natural elements of this specific Worcestershire landscape meant being at the water in the early morning. When the mist sometimes sits over the Avon and the park is at its most quietly extraordinary. Capturing the story of people enjoying the spaces during the day and chasing the light into the late afternoon and evening when the low sun comes through the trees and picks out the details.

Drone work here gave a perspective on the relationship between the park, the river and the surrounding countryside. I am forever moved by the perspective that this eye in the sky gives. It enhances what you capture at ground level. The meadow laid out below, or the Avon threading through it. The park sitting in the landscape as though it belongs there, which, after all these decades, it does.

Photo, Video and Drone at Abbot’s Salford

The holiday park photography from Abbot’s Salford in Worcestershire are quieter than the coastal holiday parks. There is a different tempo here. Children fishing with grandparents. The outdoor pool on a summer afternoon with the meadow beyond the fence. People gathered at the clubhouse in the evening. The kind of unhurried social ease that comes from being among people you know. The holiday park hosts a community that has chosen this particular stretch of the River Avon as its anchor. And that choice shows in how people move through the space.

That quality, of a community that is at home in its landscape and in one another’s company, is what the holiday park photography and images were made to carry. It cannot be staged and it cannot be hurried, the storytelling unfolds naturally when all of these elements come together. Which is the same kind of patience that a river teaches, given long enough.

My work as a photographer and ocean storyteller has taken me from the wild coasts of Scotland to the wild edges of Iceland.

It was with immense gratitude and a sense of deepening purpose that a story I captured gain 2nd Place in the Conservation (Impact) category for Ocean Photographer of the Year 2024.

As President of the Board of Trustees for Whale Wise and a Marine Mammal Medic with BDMLR, I advocate for our blue planet through powerful visuals and purpose-driven narratives.
