Snorkelling with Puffins and Seals: An Unforgettable Skomer Island Adventure
Exploring underwater photography around Skomer Island with Celtic Deep is nothing short of magical. Known for their passionate conservation work, Celtic Deep offers an experience that goes beyond typical snorkelling adventures.

I had the incredible opportunity to snorkel at South Haven, and then again in July at North Haven, each time witnessing the mesmerising dance of nature up close. As a Marine Mammal Medic with BDMLR, I cherish moments like these, where we encounter happy, healthy seals and curious puffins, rewilding our connection to nature.

playful puffins – my favourite birds
Puffins, also known as “sea parrots,” are captivating creatures with their vibrant beaks and expressive eyes. To facilitate an encounter, Celtic Deep guides us to let the puffins come to us. Wearing life-sized puffin hats, destined to be this season’s fashion must-have, we mimicked their behaviours, sparking their curiosity. Carefully mimicking the ducking and rafting behaviours encourages the puffins to approach.
suddenly, i was surrounded
By these charming birds, their flapping wings and quirky antics creating an unforgettable spectacle. Puffins, primarily found in the North Atlantic, return to Skomer Island every year to breed, and seeing them up close was a dream come true.

In addition to the puffin we also saw lots of the puffin’s cousins in the Auk family of birds, razorbills and guillemots. Razorbills look very dapper in their plumage and act very refined around the puffins!

July brought us to North Haven, where the conditions were a bit more challenging with swells, yet the experience was equally breathtaking. We immersed ourselves in the rafts of puffins, feeling like part of their world. A grey seal swam alongside us, adding to the thrill. A young seal had engaged in a delightful game of hide and seek. She would drop into the kelp, her big eyes and nose peeking out, only to disappear and reappear, showcasing her playful nature. Moments like these, capturing their joy and freedom through my underwater photography at Skomer Island, are profoundly moving.

Celtic Deep’s commitment to marine conservation enhances this unique experience. They work tirelessly to protect marine life, ensuring that future generations can witness the wonders of Skomer Island. By guiding us to interact respectfully with wildlife, they foster a deep appreciation for these remarkable creatures. Snorkelling with puffins and seals off Skomer Island isn’t just an adventure; it’s a transformative experience that rewilds our souls, reconnecting us with the wild and reminding us of the beauty and fragility of our natural world.

10 Tips to Prepare for Snorkeling with Puffins and Seals: Underwater photography at Skomer Island
book in advance
This popular adventure with Celtic Deep fills up quickly, especially during puffin season (puffins come to land to breed between late March and late July, and are out at sea for the rest of the year). Reserve your spot early to avoid disappointment.
check the weather
The conditions can be unpredictable. Keep an eye on the weather forecast and prepare for changes to wind and rain. Layering up with appropriate gear can help you stay comfortable on the journey.
wear the right gear
Invest in a good quality wetsuit to stay warm in the chilly waters; we used open cell 7mm wetsuits which kept us warm in the chilly spring sea. Celtic Deep also hire all the equipment, but bringing your own mask and snorkel can ensure a better fit and comfort.
practice snorkelling techniques
If you’re new to snorkelling, practice in a pool or calm waters beforehand. Being comfortable with your gear and breathing techniques will enhance your experience.
learn about puffin behaviour
Understanding puffin habits and behaviours can help you interact with them more effectively. Read up on their feeding patterns and social behaviours to maximise your encounter.
bring a waterproof camera
Capture the magical moments of underwater photography at Skomer Island with a waterproof camera housing or a GoPro. Ensure you have a secure strap to prevent losing it in the water. Also familiarise yourself with how your housing works before getting into the water!
follow conservation guidelines
Celtic Deep emphasizes respectful wildlife interactions. Familiarize yourself with their guidelines to ensure you contribute to conservation efforts and protect the natural habitat.
prepare for seasickness
If you’re prone to seasickness, consider taking medication beforehand. The journey to Skomer Island can be bumpy, and being prepared can prevent discomfort.
stay calm and relaxed
Marine life is more likely to approach if you remain calm and still in the water. Practice controlled breathing and gentle movements to make the most of your encounters. Let the birds come to you.
be respectful of the environment
Leave no trace. Dispose of any trash properly, and avoid disturbing the natural surroundings. Your respect for the environment ensures these experiences can continue for others.
By following these tips, you’ll be well-prepared to dive into the enchanting world of puffins and seals, making your snorkelling adventure off Skomer Island with Celtic Deep a memorable and meaningful experience.
