Connecting with the elements: how I connect with nature, light, and storytelling to plan my drone shoots
The natural world is my compass. Whether I’m standing barefoot, toes buried in the sand, watching clouds stretch across the sky or mapping the tide’s return, everything begins with presence. My drone shoots don’t start in the air, they start on the ground, listening, connecting and planning.
Drone photography is more than a technical skill. For me, it’s a sacred act of connection. A way of co-creating with the elements and translating the language of light into visual story. I don’t just fly to capture a scene, I fly to feel it. Honouring the land, the sea, the sky and the unseen forces that shape them all.
Planning drone shoots this way is possible as I’ve honed my technical skills over many years. This allows space for this deep attunement. It’s an elemental collaboration – with wind, water, earth and sun – that asks for trust, patience and reciprocity. It’s about finding the moment where awe meets intention.
This is how I connect with nature, light and storytelling to guide every drone shoot.

The role of light in aerial storytelling
Light is one of my most trusted collaborators. It shapes not just what I see, but how a story is felt. The way it pours across a salt marsh at sunrise or skims across the sea at golden hour offers clues to the mood a shoot might hold.
When planning aerial work and drone shoots, I always start with the sun. I track its arc through the day. Studying the angles it will take at different times of year. Working with the shadows it carves into the landscape.
The drone gives me access to perspectives most people never get to see. Though it’s the light that reveals what’s worth witnessing. Backlight through trees or long shadows across landscapes. These liminal moment where everything glows just before the sun dips below the horizon. It’s here that aerial storytelling becomes less about the scene and more about the sensation.
I often return to the same places, flying at different times, watching how light shifts mood and message. The story is never static – it’s revealed slowly, seasonally, through cycles of light and dark.
Nature as the narrative
Every drone shoot is a relationship. It starts with watching the tides, reading the wind, feeling the forecast in the moment and using this innate connection to earth, sea and sky to co-create with.
Nature isn’t a backdrop to the work, it is a trusted and honoured partner. Ecosystems, coastlines, treetops and tide lines hold the stories. My role is to witness them and share them in ways that invite people back into relationship with the living world.
Understanding landscapes and their rhythms is essential. I don’t just ask, “can I fly here?” – I ask, “should I?” Sometimes, the answer is no. Nesting birds, sensitive habitats or shifting weather conditions call for care, not content.
Planning a drone shoot for me means looking at more than just location and light – it means tuning into a place’s energy, history and ecological presence. This is how nature leads narrative.

Telling stories from above
Aerial storytelling allows us to hold perspective and possibility in the same breath. From above, we see patterns that disappear on the ground, the winding flow of rivers, the scars of industry, the patchwork of rewilding and regrowth.
But it’s never just about the view. It’s about the invitation. Drone shoots and imagery can spark curiosity and widen awareness. Shifting how we relate to a place, it can evoke awe, urgency or belonging.
Through my drone work, I aim to create portals. Images and films that transmit frequency, not just facts. I want people to feel something. A longing to return to the wild. A reverence for the land beneath their feet, a sense of their own place within the web of life.

About me
Hi, I’m Rebecca, a drone photographer and videographer flying across Europe since 2017. I hold an A2CoC qualification and specialise in unleashing the power of the perspective that drones give to tell stories that connect people, place and planet.
From volcanic eruptions in Iceland to dramatic coastlines in Scotland, I’ve flown in some of the wildest edges of earth, sea and sky. My work is rooted in curiosity, awe and devotion to nature. I bring full production capability, including drone, camera and underwater kit, to projects that align with purpose and impact.

About me
Hey my love, I’m Rebecca, a visual storyteller, unleashing the power of photo and video to rewilding our connection to nature.
By illuminating the liminal space where myth, magick and intellect meet, we ignite collective curiosity, enchantment and awe to empower the healing of people and planet.
My work as a photographer and ocean storyteller has taken me from the wild coasts of Scotland to the wild edges of Iceland.
It was with immense gratitude and a sense of deepening purpose that a story I captured gain 2nd Place in the Conservation (Impact) category for Ocean Photographer of the Year 2024.
As a trustee of Whale Wise and a Marine Mammal Medic with BDMLR, I advocate for our blue planet through powerful visuals and purpose-driven narratives.
Together, let’s embrace the wild edges where of people, place, and planet meet.
