The storyteller’s lens: how drones illuminate the untold stories of people and place
There is a saying that there are no unique messages, only unique messengers. So when it comes to visual storytelling, drone photography and video can open up a completely different perspective on something. I firmly believe that stories tap into the deepest parts of our humanity. They help us unravel what we know and challenge us to reimagine all that is possible. Storytelling is how we make sense of the world. It connects us, moves us, and helps us see meaning in the everyday.
So when something shows us the familiar from a completely different perspective, it can have quite a disruptive effect. That disruption can be both positive and negative. Showing us the beauty of the coastline in a way so awe-inspiring it is hard to comprehend. Or opening our eyes to the plight that the ocean faces with some of the harrowing scenes that can be uncovered.
With the arrival of drones and the rapid evolution of their capabilities, a fresh chapter has opened in how we tell those stories. From above, ordinary places are revealed in extraordinary ways. Drone photography offers a vantage point that transforms the familiar into something deeply profound, Making it a powerful and impactful storytelling tool.

How drones reshape storytelling
Aerial storytelling is revolutionising how we see, feel and understand the world. Drones have liberated visual storytelling from fixed viewpoints, allowing us to move through space with fluidity, curiosity and awe. They make it possible to trace the contours of a landscape. Moving through the wildest edges of earth, sea and sky. Revealing stories that were once unreachable, from the shimmer of seagrass meadows beneath the surface to the organic patterns of salt flats and tidal deltas.
What makes drones extraordinary is their ability to merge art, science and activism in a single frame. Conservation organisations like Whale Wise use them to document the impact of ghost fishing gear on humpback whales from perspectives that minimise disturbance. Architects and geographers use them to study how human structures breathe within their environments. Filmmakers choreograph drone movement to mimic the rhythm of flight or the slow sweep of the tide, turning atmosphere itself into a character. For photographers, drones have become essential parts of our kit. Almost like intuitive partners in storytelling, translating perspectives into images that challenge narratives.
Where ground-based photography captures the heartbeat of a moment, aerial imagery reveals its ecosystem. A drone lets us witness the interconnectedness of all things and understand the scale like never before. Their cost and impact relative to a helicopter or small plane has transformed how many people are at this wild edge of storytelling.

Revealing the connection between people and place
At the heart of drone photography lies connection. By lifting our view above eye level, drones reveal how humans are part of, not separate from, the planet we inhabit. People and place are inseparable on this planet and drones help us see that truth more clearly.
Drone storytelling is a new and evolving language that expands our visual vocabulary. Letting us speak in arcs and horizons, in transitions between what was once only an imaginable perspective to easily access. It invites and confronts us to think about connection — how people, places and planet are part of one ecosystem. From conservation to creativity, from scientific research to mythic narrative, drones are not just tools for looking down; they are instruments of wonder. Giving us a way to look outward, reflect inward and impact our next steps.

Bringing untold stories to life
Some stories can only be seen from the air. Drone photography uncoves what the eye can’t from the ground. The hidden patterns, overlooked ecosystems and untold narratives that shape our world. They reveal both the fragility and the resilience of life on this planet. Offering perspective that deepens empathy and drives action.
The perspective the drone gives, dramatically changed the fate of a humpback whale in Iceland. Whilst on field work there with Whale Wise, we got news of an entangled humpback whale called Bird. From the shore, the coastguard had presumed the whale was dead as they couldn’t see any movement or blow.

But a single flight revealed the truth. Bird was alive, logging almost motionless at the surface, tethered by a fishing line trailing from a cluster of buoys. The footage gave Whale Wise the evidence needed to alert the Icelandic government and advocate for a rescue. Thanks to the extraordinary efforts of ICE-SAR and local fishers, Bird was freed. Without the drone, their story might have ended very differently.

Aerial storytelling gives us the power to witness. To see what’s happening beyond the horizon and to translate those insights into impact. I’ve flown over salt marshes revealing their hidden lifelines and seagrass meadows tracing the breath of the ocean. From above, stories of vulnerability and recovery unfold, reminders of how deeply connected people, place and planet truly are.
Drones are instruments of awareness. Amplifying the messages of the natural world and giving us a way to listen from a new perspective.
The impact of storytelling from above
Drone photography does more than document. It invites curiosity, sparks awe, and inspires action. By offering a perspective most people never experience, drones create space for new questions: What else lies hidden in plain sight? What might change if we saw ourselves not at the centre, but as part of a larger living system?
The impact of aerial storytelling is its ability to shift perspective, not just visually, but emotionally and ethically. It reminds us that our world is fragile, beautiful, and worth protecting.

About me
I’m Rebecca, a drone photographer flying across Europe since 2017 and certified with the A2CoC and I fly the DJI Mavic 3 Pro and DJI Mini 4 Pro (read more here). My passion lies in using drones to tell untold stories. Connecting people and place, bringing fresh perspectives to life, creating imagery that illuminates narratives often unseen from the ground.

About me
Hey my love, I’m Rebecca, a visual storyteller, unleashing the power of photo and video to rewilding our connection to nature.
By illuminating the liminal space where myth, magick and intellect meet, we ignite collective curiosity, enchantment and awe to empower the healing of people and planet.
My work as a photographer and ocean storyteller has taken me from the wild coasts of Scotland to the wild edges of Iceland.
It was with immense gratitude and a sense of deepening purpose that a story I captured gain 2nd Place in the Conservation (Impact) category for Ocean Photographer of the Year 2024.
As President of the Board of Trustees for Whale Wise and a Marine Mammal Medic with BDMLR, I advocate for our blue planet through powerful visuals and purpose-driven narratives.
Together, let’s embrace the wild edges where of people, place, and planet meet.
