If you’ve not seen them before they’re often described as a UFO shaped phenomenon in the sky, those otherworldly, saucer-shaped formations that seem plucked from a sci-fi film. As transient as they are striking, lenticular clouds capture the intersection of science, myth, and the messages the natural world sends us, if we’re tuned in enough to listen.

What are lenticular clouds?

Lenticular clouds form when stable, moist air flows over an obstacle like a mountain or ridge and creates standing waves in the atmosphere. Occasionally they can form over manmade structures too. When the conditions are just right, these waves condense at their crests, forming lens-shaped clouds. Their smooth, layered appearance often leads to mistaken UFO sightings or imaginings of celestial highways.

Lenticular clouds are stationary, fixed in place while the air moves through them, replenishing the moisture needed to maintain their structure. Their unique formation requires very specific atmospheric conditions:

  • Stable air layers that flow over a topographic obstacle.
  • Sufficient moisture at the altitude where the waves form.
  • A sharp temperature gradient that allows water vapour to condense.
