North Foreland: a liminal thread between land and sea

On this Isle of Thanet, edged by sea from the north, east and south, light dances across chalk, sand and sky in ways that still take my breath away. Just over an hour from London, this coastline offers more than pretty views – it holds story, rhythm and soul. North Foreland isn’t a named beach in its own right, but a stretch of coastal path and cliff-lined foreshore that connects Stone Bay and Joss Bay.

It’s one of my favourite liminal spaces. At low tide, a narrow beach pathway emerges. Winding through seaweed, flint and chalk to reveal the wild space between bays. It’s a place of transition, perfect for storytelling rooted in transformation, duality and becoming.

What the landscape is like

This isn’t a wide beach destination. It’s a tucked-away thread of shoreline framed by towering chalk cliffs and the North Foreland lighthouse above. You’ll find wild textures: exposed rock, seaweed, sand patches and occasional rock pools.

There’s a sense of being held here — but also of movement. It’s a location that quite literally disappears and reappears with the tide. Making it an incredible setting for stories that honour cycles, change and presence.

Light and seasonal shifts

  • Best light: Early morning and golden hour bring softness to the stark cliffs.
  • Tide: Low tide only — the connecting beach path is fully submerged otherwise.
  • Seasons: Spring and autumn offer dramatic skies and fewer people. Midsummer light can be dazzling for strong contrast and bold shadows.

Practical notes

  • Access: On foot only — best approached from Stone Bay or Joss Bay during low tide.
  • Facilities: None directly here — nearest options at either end (Stone Bay Broadstairs or Joss Bay café/kiosk).
  • Parking: Broadstairs town for Stone Bay; Joss Bay car park at the other end.
  • Tide watch: Critical to check tide times — access is cut off at high tide.

Work with me at North Foreland

This is a place of thresholds, between known and unknown, tide and land, light and shadow. I often bring clients to North Foreland when a story needs that sense of quiet transformation. There’s something alchemical about walking this tide-revealed path, like stepping into the in-between.

Whether you’re a founder marking a transition, a brand honouring cycles or a storyteller seeking elemental depth, this location holds powerful symbolism.

About me

Hey my love, I’m Rebecca. A visual storyteller, unleashing the power of photo and video to rewilding our connection to nature. I am also an AuDHD – an autistic ADHDer.

By illuminating the liminal space where myth, magick and intellect meet, we ignite collective curiosity, enchantment and awe to empower the healing of people and planet.

My work as a photographer and ocean storyteller has taken me from the wild coasts of Scotland to the wild edges of Iceland.

It was with immense gratitude and a sense of deepening purpose that a story I captured gain 2nd Place in the Conservation (Impact) category for Ocean Photographer of the Year 2024.

As President of the Board of Trustees for Whale Wise and a Marine Mammal Medic with BDMLR, I advocate for our blue planet through powerful visuals and purpose-driven narratives.

Together, let’s embrace the wild edges where of people, place, and planet meet.
