Ramsgate Main Sands: vibrant shores and soul nourishment – Locations in Thanet
Thanet, a peninsula on the east Kent coast, is surrounded by the sea to the north, east and south. Just over an hour from London by road or rail, it holds a rare coastal diversity. Golden beaches, chalk cliffs, tidal pools and heritage-rich towns that invite deeper connection. Ramsgate Main Sands sits just beside the UK’s only Royal Harbour, with a wide stretch of golden sand, shimmering tides and a playful, community-centred energy. It’s a perfect setting for shoots that want to blend nature, people and place, from purpose-led brands to joyful, soulful lifestyle work.
I grew up here, and now work from my studio just above the sea. From my desk, I can look out across the horizon to France. This view — ever-changing from sunrise to sunset — offers a grounding presence that continues to shape my creativity, photography and storytelling.

What the landscape is like
Ramsgate Main Sands is one of Thanet’s most well-loved beaches. With its generous golden sands backed by cliffs and Georgian architecture, and the harbour curving around to one side, it offers both openness and character.
The beach is lined with cafés, ice cream parlours, water sports and family-friendly facilities, making it lively and accessible. But it also holds moments of quiet. Especially at sunrise, when the tide is low and the sea is soft with light.
On a clear day, you can see all the way to France. It’s a beautiful reminder of our proximity to the wider world and the constant presence of the sea as a threshold between places.
Ramsgate Main Sands is an ideal beach for visual stories that balance warmth, community and natural rhythm.

Light and tide
Ramsgate Main Sands faces south-east, making it a spectacular spot for sunrise. The light shifts gently across the harbour walls, tide lines and sky. Perfect for storytelling with a luminous, soulful feel.
- Low tide: Reveals wide wet sand, ripples and tidal reflections
- Mid tide: Keeps ample space for movement and varied compositions
- High tide: Water reaches up toward the cliffs — creating intimacy and focus
The light and sea are always changing at Ramsgate Main Sands. It’s a space I return to daily, and each time it offers something new. A mirror, a mood, a moment of clarity.
Accessibility and facilities
- Access: Multiple sloped and step-free entry points
- Parking: Several nearby pay-and-display car parks
- Facilities: Toilets, cafés, amusements, water sports hire and harbour shops
- Dogs: Restricted 1 May–30 September, 10am–6pm
This makes Ramsgate Main Sands a brilliant option for inclusive, practical shoot days that still allow space for visual magic.
