Soulful Connection: ADHD, Creativity, and Nature

Navigating life with a relatively new diagnosis of ADHD has led me on a profound journey of self-discovery, where the intricate threads of creativity and the soothing embrace of nature have woven together to form a tapestry of resilience and growth.

Here are some of my reflections on this journey:

ADHD: The creative force

ADHD, often characterised by a mind that dances to its own rhythm, has been a pool of creativity in my life. The energetic flow of thoughts, the relentless pursuit of novelty, and the ability to see connections where others might not – these are the hallmarks of an ADHD mind. It’s as if my thoughts are like fireflies, illuminating the darkness with flashes of brilliance.

As a branding and lifestyle photographer, this creative energy has been both a blessing and a challenge. The unbridled imagination and the ability to think outside the box are invaluable assets in a field where innovation and storytelling are paramount. Yet, the flip side of ADHD, with its potential for distraction on the journey to realising these ideas, can pose hurdles, with lots of started but unfinished projects and ideas.

Nature: A sanctuary of regulation

Amid this symphony of thoughts, nature is always a place of sanctuary for me. It’s where the chaos of my mind finds balance and regulation. When I immerse myself in the natural world, something extraordinary happens. The rhythmic cadence of the seasons, the gentle ebb and flow of tides, and the cyclical dance of the moon create a sense of order that resonates with the deepest layers of my being.

Nature offers a profound lesson in regulation. It reminds me that life is a series of cycles, each with its unique beauty and purpose. It’s an embodiment of mindfulness, where the present moment is all that matters. In the embrace of nature, I find solace and a respite from my busy brain.

Soulful Connection: ADHD, creativity and nature

The connection between ADHD, creativity and nature is a tapestry of contrasts and harmonies. ADHD gifts me the ability to perceive the world through kaleidoscopic lenses, finding inspiration in the mundane and magick in the overlooked. Nature, with its serene beauty, anchors me, providing a framework of regulation that allows my creativity to flourish.

As I’ve embarked on a cyclical journey with the changing seasons, the restlessness of my ADHD mind hushes in nature. I feel such an energy flowing through me in natural spaces, most of all when I’m floating, faced down, snorkelling in the sea. Nature reminds me that growth also requires stillness, that true creativity arises not just from the chaos of ideas but from the quiet moments of reflection.

Building a sustainable future

I work with conscious brands and soulful entrepreneurs and I’ve discovered a profound synergy. The connection with nature, the celebration of creativity and the resilience born from ADHD all converge in a shared vision – a future that sustains not just us, but the entire planet.

As we question the status quo and challenge preconceived notions, we find inspiration in the wisdom of nature. We learn that true progress is not about perpetual growth, but about balance and harmony. It’s about honouring the cyclical rhythms that govern our existence and infusing our endeavours with authenticity and a deep rooted connection to source.

My journey with ADHD, creativity and nature is a testament to the beauty of diversity in all its forms. It’s a reminder that the most profound insights often emerge at the intersection of contrasts, and that, in the dance of chaos and regulation, we discover the true essence of our souls.

About me

Hey my love, I’m Rebecca. A visual storyteller, unleashing the power of photo and video to rewilding our connection to nature. I am also an AuDHD – an autistic ADHDer.

By illuminating the liminal space where myth, magick and intellect meet, we ignite collective curiosity, enchantment and awe to empower the healing of people and planet.

My work as a photographer and ocean storyteller has taken me from the wild coasts of Scotland to the wild edges of Iceland.

It was with immense gratitude and a sense of deepening purpose that a story I captured gain 2nd Place in the Conservation (Impact) category for Ocean Photographer of the Year 2024.

As President of the Board of Trustees for Whale Wise and a Marine Mammal Medic with BDMLR, I advocate for our blue planet through powerful visuals and purpose-driven narratives.

Together, let’s embrace the wild edges where of people, place, and planet meet.
