Kingsgate Bay: sea arches, stillness and coastal sanctuary – Locations in Thanet

Thanet is a peninsula hugged by the sea on three sides, where the coastline holds wild chalk cliffs, golden beaches and shifting light. Just over an hour from London by train or car, it’s both close and deeply immersive. A place to reconnect, reimagine and slow down. Tucked between Broadstairs and Botany Bay, Kingsgate Bay is a tucked-away treasure.

This is where I grew up. These edges are in my bones, from tidepool wanderings to chasing light along the clifftops. This land has shaped how I see and feel. That embodied connection to earth, sea and sky is central to every image I make.

Kingsgate Bay’s chalk sea stacks, gentle tide and fairytale cliffs, makes it a location that offers calm, clarity and cinematic beauty. Ideal for founders, creatives and purpose-led brands looking to root their story in stillness and soul.

What the landscape is like

Kingsgate Bay feels like a hidden world. Accessed via a steep slope or stairway carved into the chalk, it opens onto a wide sweep of golden sand sheltered by high cliffs. The beach is flanked by chalk sea stacks that rise like ancient guardians. It’s iconic and instantly recognisable.

Kingsgate Bay is a place for slow, grounded shoots. Think barefoot walks, windswept portraiture, elemental stillness and thoughtful pauses. There’s an atmosphere of sanctuary here. Ideal for visuals that hold both presence and poise.

Kingsgate Castle on the clifftop adds a touch of historic intrigue, offering elegant contrast to the raw, natural textures of the beach below.

Light and tide

Kingsgate Bay faces north-east, which means it picks up beautiful soft morning light and is gently shaded by late afternoon. The cliffs and stacks catch the light differently throughout the day, offering dynamic contrast and tone.

  • Low tide: reveals intricate rock formations, pools and golden sand for open compositions
  • Mid tide: maintains access and supports storytelling with layered textures
  • High tide: can cover most of the sand and limit access — check tide times in advance

Kingsgate Bay is a location where softness and structure meet. Making it perfect for story-driven shoots with a poetic, reflective tone.

Accessibility and facilities

  • Access: Steep path or steps from above — not ideal for limited mobility
  • Parking: Nearby pay-and-display above the cliffs
  • Facilities: Seasonal kiosk, toilets a short walk away, no permanent shops on site
  • Dogs: Restricted from 1 May to 30 September, 10am–6pm

Due to the access, Kingsgate Bay is best suited to lightweight setups and intentionally planned sessions. Perfect for when you want to create with care.
