St Mildred’s Bay: coastal calm and golden simplicity – Locations in Thanet
Thanet is a coastal peninsula in East Kent, surrounded by the sea on three sides. Just over an hour from London by train or road, it offers a surprising diversity of landscapes. Golden sands, chalk cliffs, tidal pools and characterful coastal towns. St Mildred’s Bay is a west-facing beach in Westgate-on-Sea, just along from the better-known West Bay. With its long promenade, soft sands and tidal shifts, it’s a grounded and spacious setting for brand shoots that crave calm and clarity.
This place shaped me. I grew up along these edges, learning how to read light, listen to weather, and hold space for the wild pauses between things. That deep connection to nature and rhythm infuses everything I create.

What the landscape is like
St Mildred’s Bay is an open, gently sloping beach with firm golden sand, low sea walls and soft curves shaped by the tide. It’s framed by the Victorian architecture of Westgate behind and opens wide toward the horizon ahead.
The beach is often scattered with seaweed textures, rock pools and tidal lines that offer beautiful visual variety. St Mildred’s Bay is ideal for detail-rich shots, product work and founder imagery that wants to feel rooted in place.
It’s a location that feels steady, open and accessible. Perfect for those seeking a gentle, honest landscape that holds space for deeper stories.

Light and tide
As a west-facing beach, St Mildred’s is bathed in golden light during sunset, with warm tones stretching out across the sand. Even in moody weather, the reflected light creates beautiful atmosphere — soft and diffuse.
Tide makes a big difference at St Mildred’s Bay:
- Low tide reveals a wide, walkable beach with reflective pools
- Mid tide offers a mix of wet sand and shallow water
- High tide brings the sea right up to the promenade, creating a more contained, elemental energy
Best times for shooting: golden hour, after a rain shower, or low tide at dusk when the wet sand glows.

Accessibility and facilities
- Access: Fully flat promenade access, ideal for all mobility levels
- Parking: Free and pay-and-display street parking nearby
- Facilities: Public toilets, seasonal café, pub and beach shop
- Dogs: Restricted 10am–6pm from 1 May–30 September
St Mildred’s Bay ease and simplicity, makes it ideal for relaxed shoots or for pairing with a walk-and-shoot session through nearby Westgate town or gardens.
