Margate Lido: tidal textures and nostalgia by the sea – Locations in Thanet
Thanet, perched on the farthest corner of East Kent, is surrounded by the sea on three sides. Just over an hour from London, it offers a coastline alive with possibility, from iconic town beaches to tidal pools, cliffs and hidden coves. This is where I grew up, and these edges have shaped how I see. Working just down the coast, always drawn back by the movement of the tides, the rhythms of weather, and the light that pours across this land. Each location I shoot in holds story – and few hold it like Margate Lido.
Positioned between the bustle of Margate Main Sands and the quiet curve of Walpole Bay, the Lido is part ruin, part stage. There’s a sense of place here, of something both weathered and watching. It’s ideal for visual storytelling that carries grit, soul and a love of the wild, liminal edge.

What the landscape is like
Margate Lido sits at the base of a sea wall, with tide-worn steps, faded blue railings and dramatic views across the North Sea. At low tide, a vast sweep of sand and rippled rock is revealed, stretching towards the tidal pool of Walpole.
The old Margate Lido building, now partially derelict, lends a powerful visual atmosphere. Textured walls, rusted handrails, bold shapes and industrial silhouettes create an edgy contrast to the softness of the sea. The whole area carries a quiet defiance. A kind of beauty that comes from being exposed to the elements.
This makes it a striking location for founders, brands and creatives who want their story to hold emotional texture, weathered resilience and raw, coastal energy.

Light and tide at Margate Lido
Facing north-east, the Margate Lido captures delicate morning light, often bouncing off the stone and steel in beautifully unexpected ways.
- Low tide: Reveals the most detail, rock pools, sand, and paths around the sea wall
- Mid tide: Keeps good beach access with soft motion in the water
- High tide: Fills the tidal pool, covering most of the sand and pulling focus towards the waves and sky
The changing levels and reflections at Margate Lido offer a rich canvas for visual experimentation. Especially if you’re drawn to lightplay, shadow, texture and story.

Accessibility and facilities
- Access: Steep steps and slopes from the clifftop, not ideal for limited mobility.
- Parking: On-street or town centre car parks nearby.
- Facilities: Close to Margate Old Town, cafés, shops and seasonal toilets.
- Dogs: Seasonal restrictions apply, check council guidance.
While not the easiest beach to reach, it’s well worth the extra effort for a location with as much mood and visual depth as Margate Lido.
Work with me at Margate Lido
There’s something magnetic about this place. The way the tide carves memory into stone. The way Margate Lido clings to the edge, defiantly holding space.
If your project is calling for a sense of grit, nostalgia, edge or transformation, Margate Lido is a location that supports story like few others. I bring deep local knowledge, a fine-tuned eye for light, and an intuitive sense of how to co-create with place.
